Santa Barbara SKY FC has officially announced its entry into the USL Championship for the 2026 season.
The expansion team’s incorporation into one of the nation’s premier professional soccer leagues marks a huge milestone for both Santa Barbara and the sport’s growth in the Central Coast.
Peter Moore, the founding owner of SKY FC and former CEO of Liverpool FC, expressed his enthusiasm about the team’s inclusion in the USL Championship.
“It has taken time and dedication, but our commitment to bring professional soccer to Santa Barbara, a community deserving of nothing less, has paid off,” said Moore. “By locking in our position in the USL Championship, we are thrilled to kick off in the 2026 season.”
In anticipation of its 2026 debut, Santa Barbara SKY FC aims to become a hallmark of California’s soccer scene, nurturing local talent and providing high-caliber entertainment to fans. The club’s presence is expected to have positive economic outcomes, enhancing local businesses and augmenting tourism.
For a year leading up to their first season, SKY FC will use their philanthropic arm, Fundación Cielo, to connect with community needs and promote social and cultural ties within the Central Coast area.
The decision for Sky FC to join the higher-tier USL Championship, as opposed to the previously anticipated USL League One, reflects the organization’s commitment to quality and a strategic position in the landscape of American soccer. The timing is synergistic with the rise in soccer’s national prominence, coinciding with the hosting of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S.
A partnership with UCSB’s Harder Stadium assures a premier matchday experience, with stadium enhancements and infrastructure improvements being planned in anticipation of the team’s inaugural season in the USL Championship.
Harder Stadium’s 17,000-seat capacity and state-of-the-art facilities will serve as the backdrop for SKY FC’s home games, offering fans an intimate and immersive viewing experience.
The United Soccer League, founded in 1986, is a well-established and fast-growing entity in the U.S. soccer community, providing a clear pathway from youth to professional levels in its organized structure. With its games accessible across multiple media platforms, including CBS Sports, ESPN, and Peacock, the USL ensures wide-reaching visibility for its teams, including the soon-to-debut Santa Barbara SKY FC.
As Santa Barbara Sky FC gear up for their historic participation in the USL Championship, soccer enthusiasts can look forward to a heightened sporting experience on California’s Central Coast.
