More than 50 protests across 20 states, including Santa Barbara, will take place on Saturday as part of a nationwide “Fight the Trump Takeover” movement.
The protest is part of a National Day of Action aimed at protesting Republican redistricting efforts, also known as gerrymandering, in Texas and other red states, which is supported by President Donald Trump.
“Trump knows the only way he can hold the majority after his budget betrayal is by changing the rules in the middle of the game to avoid accountability for ripping health care and food away from millions of Americans,” said Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin in a statement.
Indivisible Santa Barbara is hosting the local protest that’s scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. along State Street between Hitchcock Way and Hope Ave.
Local organizers state this mobilization is a direct response to Trump’s plan to rig the 2026 election by redrawing Congressional districts in favor of Republicans and attacking the voting rights of communities of color, young people and the working class.
“This is not a partisan political fight,” said Ian Paige, a member of the Indivisible Santa Barbara team that is organizing the Fight the Trump Takeover event. “It is a pressure test of our democracy. Trump’s policies are deeply unpopular—from the persecution of our immigrant friends and neighbors to the invasion by American soldiers of cities like Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. But rather than face backlash from angry voters, Trump has ordered Republicans in Texas and elsewhere to deliver him additional seats in Congress. We urge all friends of democracy—Democrats, Independents and Republicans—to stand up against this naked, dictatorial power grab.”
Organizers state protestors will gather on both sides of State Street and are encouraged to bring protest signs. They also state their events adhere to a shared commitment to nonviolent protest and community safety.
Organizers are trained in de-escalation and are working closely with local partners to ensure peaceful and powerful actions nationwide.

I don’t disagree that it would be good for progressives to show more support for hard-working law enforcement officers and respect for the difficult job they have chosen in service to their communities. But let’s be real. The leader of the Republican party has no genuine respect or appreciation for law enforcement. If he respected law enforcement, why would he have pardoned people who beat police officers on January 6, 2021? Or negotiated the release of a triple-murderer in Venezuela and repatriated him to the United States? You would think that a person so concerned about crime would not want to import a convicted murderer into our country.
Sadly, our president’s support for law enforcement officers exists only insofar as those officers are supportive of the president’s personal desires. The same is true of our military. Remember, Trump himself said he prefers soldiers who were not captured as prisoners of war.

Most liberals are for fairness. Speaking for myself, I want every citizen to have one vote, and for every vote to be fairly counted. I want neither party to have an unfair advantage in any way, including districting. If a fair election goes fairly, no one will get what they want, but all of us will get something we can live with, and that’s good enough for me.
