On Saturday, June 14, a nationwide movement dubbed “No Kings” will take place in over 1,800 cities across the United States. Millions are expected to join what organizers are calling the largest single-day protest against authoritarianism since President Donald Trump returned to office.

Among the participating cities is Santa Barbara, where protesters will gather at 10:30 a.m. along Cabrillo Boulevard near Chase Palm Park in what organizers state is a peaceful rejection of authoritarian governance and to highlight the growing concerns over inequality and the militarization of American democracy.

Organizers have said regarding the protests: “All No Kings events adhere to a shared commitment to nonviolent protest and community safety. Organizers are trained in de-escalation and are working closely with local partners to ensure peaceful and powerful actions nationwide.”

Coinciding with the mass mobilization is Trump’s controversial $45 million military parade on his 79th birthday. Critics have slammed the parade as a taxpayer-funded display of self-indulgence, particularly while essential public programs, such as Social Security, Medicaid, and public schools, continue to face budgetary cuts. Organizers describe the No Kings protests as a direct counter to the billion-dollar-first policies that have dominated Trump’s administration.

The parade is also expected to commemorate the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary and will include about 6,600 soldiers, as well as about 150 vehicles and over 50 aircraft.

The theme of the No Kings movement is clear: “In America, we don’t do kings.” Protesters across the country will call out what they see as escalating corruption, attacks on civil rights, and disregard for judicial rulings.

“Whether you’re outraged by attacks on civil rights, skyrocketing costs, abductions and disappearances, the gutting of essential services, or the assault on free speech—this moment is for you. Whether you’ve been in the fight for years or you’re just fed up and ready to take action—this moment is for you,” Indivisible Santa Barbara posted on social media.

Many participants see Trump’s military parade as emblematic of broader issues in his administration, including the prioritization of wealthy and military interests over average citizens.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has put together a list of 5 things the $45 million in taxpayer dollars could fund instead of a massive military parade including covering a year of disability compensation for more than 7,200 military veterans.

In Santa Barbara, activists plan to highlight issues beyond authoritarianism, including income inequality, the erosion of public services, and ecological concerns. The protest begins at 10:30 a.m. on Cabrillo Boulevard with a goal to form a human-chain along oceanside Cabrillo Blvd from Calle Cesar Chavez to Castillo Street. More information on the event can be found here.

Protesters are also encouraged to visit Santa Barbara’s Juneteenth celebration that same day at the Plaza del Mar bandshell at Cabrillo and Castillo which runs until 6:00 p.m. Saturday.

  1. This part of the voting electorate clearly doesn’t understand that this is one of the reasons that you lost the election – you’re on the wrong side of what the majority of the American people want. Trump was clear as day with his agenda & he won in a landslide, he won all the swing states too – no disputing this fact.

  2. Interesting.

I Ran the L.A.P.D. I Know What Happens When Troops Are Sent to American Cities.

“Over the past week, President Trump has deployed more military troops to the streets of Los Angeles than there are stationed in Iraq and Syria. The president has warned that if protests break out in other cities, he’ll send troops to “attack” with even greater force. “You’ll have them all over the country,” he said.

That would be a mistake. Deploying soldiers to any American city isn’t just at odds with the principles of our democracy. It’s tactically unsound.

I speak from experience. Over the course of more than 40 years with the Los Angeles Police Department — including nearly six as chief of police — I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t in times of civil unrest. I was an officer during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, when federal troops were last deployed to our streets. I witnessed the confusion and the risks created by sending soldiers trained for combat into a civilian environment. Even basic commands like “cover me” were misunderstood — interpreted by troops as calls for gunfire rather than tactical positioning. Whereas police officers are taught to use time, distance and de-escalation, soldiers are trained to apply overwhelming force.”

  3. This is without doubt the most powerful piece of advocacy journalism I’ve read in a long time:

“Mr. Trump and Mr. Miller understand the power of human stories.

“Make no mistake: Mr. Trump is not waging a war for the streets. He is fighting a war for the hearts and minds of Americans. The most formidable weapon on this battlefield is the human story. Not fire, not fists, not bullets. The war will be won only through strategic and relentless exposure.

These videos are particularly dangerous to Mr. Trump because they expose something his politics can’t touch: the fierce humanity of people willing to risk everything for one another. They don’t just document resistance — they ignite it. They move people not just to care, but to act, to intervene, to put their own bodies on the line.

It was human stories that motivated them to be there. Those stories sparked their compassion and courage. Mr. Trump is vulnerable in the face of those emotions. He depends on fear and hate. That is why he will continue to try to goad the city into violence so that he can regain the upper hand.

The people of Los Angeles can take the bait and lose the narrative war. Or they can stay disciplined in their nonviolent protests and production of human stories. Then Mr. Trump’s attempt to provoke chaos will collapse under its own cruelty.”

Instagram posts are linked in this article. They’re limited to 18 and over. What the heck?! Instagram is censoring heart-rending stories of ICE seizures on the basis that they’re unfit for some viewers. What does that tell you?!

  4. It’s just business and trump will do what his crony capitalists want

“The Trump administration has abruptly shifted the focus of its mass deportation campaign, telling Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to largely pause raids and arrests in the agricultural industry, hotels and restaurants, according to an internal email and three U.S. officials with knowledge of the guidance.

The decision suggested that the scale of President Trump’s mass deportation campaign — an issue that is at the heart of his presidency — is hurting industries and constituencies that he does not want to lose.

The new guidance comes after protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s immigration raids, including at farms and businesses. It also came as Mr. Trump made a rare concession this week that his crackdown was hurting American farmers and hospitality businesses.

The guidance was sent on Thursday in an email by a senior ICE official, Tatum King, to regional leaders of the ICE department that generally carries out criminal investigations, including work site operations, known as Homeland Security Investigations.

    • He didn’t realize that agriculture and hotels and restaurants depend on “undocumented” workers? Or that there really are jobs that Americans just won’t do? I call BS – he specifically ordered the raids on fields and Home Depot. When challenged, he blessed them. His only response was that “if they’re here illegally then they are criminals.” Now he says that “many have been here over twenty years…they’re good people.” Epiphany of an idiot. Yeah – TACO man strikes again. No wonder the rest of the world doesn’t trust him. He “always chickens out.”
