Officer Adrian Gutierrez, a lifelong Eastside Santa Barbara resident and a nearly 30-year veteran of the Santa Barbara Police Department, officially retired on Wednesday, July 23. Officer Gutierrez is widely recognized for his dedication to serving the community, his commitment to local youth, and his legacy of building trust between law enforcement and residents.
Over the course of his career, Officer Gutierrez received numerous honors, including being named the California Police Activities League Officer of the Year in 2020 and earning the prestigious H. Thomas Guerry Award for Valor in 2022 for rescuing a man from a house fire. He also earned a commendation from the city for his years of service and his work to uplift the Santa Barbara community.
Gutierrez served in a variety of impactful roles, including as a community liaison, beat coordinator, Police Activities League (PAL) officer, school resource officer, and a member of the Criminal Narcotics and Research Team (CNRT). He was a founding member of the Santa Barbara Police Activities League, where he helped develop the program at the local, state, and national levels.
Known for his integrity and compassion, Gutierrez focused much of his work on mentoring youth and fostering positive relationships between the police and the community. His efforts to help young people thrive became a hallmark of his career.
“We are deeply grateful for his selfless service, his leadership, and the kindness he brought to every part of his work. Congratulations on your retirement, Officer Gutierrez. Your impact will be felt for years to come,” the Santa Barbara Police Department shared in a statement on social media.
The outpouring of gratitude for Gutierrez highlights a remarkable career dedicated to making Santa Barbara a safer, stronger, and more compassionate community.
