[On Tuesday], Santa Barbara MTD announced the launch of MTD Moves Ahead, a community process to create a Short Range Transit Plan that will guide bus service development, infrastructure investment, and capital needs for MTD’s bus system over the next five years.

New residential developments, changes to commutes, technology, and the economy all mean a big opportunity to rethink transit on Santa Barbara County’s South Coast.

To prioritize our community’s needs and desires for bus service, MTD is seeking broad community input from everyone—people who ride the bus and those who don’t, employees, employers, students, people with disabilities, seniors, and civic leaders. If you live or work here, MTD wants to hear from you!

The process starts now, with a virtual listening session scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., where attendees will be asked to weigh in on what is most important to them in a bus system. Interested individuals can register here for the listening session. Spanish/English interpretation will be provided.

Additionally, an interactive website with project information and a short survey is available in English at sbmtd.gov/MTDMovesAhead and at sbmtd.gov/MTDAvanza in Spanish.

MTD looks forward to hearing from the public as they share their experiences with our local bus system, their priorities for our service, and what they would like to see in the future.

It’s nice that MTD listens to people, but it’s a frustrating endeavor. Their funds never stretch far enough, so people ask and ask, year after year, for certain route improvements, and most are disappointed. You want a direct route from the eastside to city college? Then some other route will have to be cut. It does pay to speak up, because MTD does shift things around, and you have to advocate for your own interests.

Express bus shelter at the Transit Center? Riders have been asking for this for many years. Millions were spent to rebuild the Transit Center in a way that made little difference. But there is still no shelter for people waiting for the express buses on Chapala Street. What is going on?

Excellent point, Robert. The Chapala boarding site is treated as if it is an afterthought, when in fact it’s a major boarding site for many buses throughout the day. And now the Line 1 boards on Figueroa, also with no shelter. I try to be positive, because I understand that funds are limited, but the decisions made on high rarely please me.

If there is to be any real change to the usability of public transportation it has to include the first mile and last mile. There are several communities around the country using an Uber/shared ride type of service to transport riders from neighborhoods to public transportation concentration points, resulting in fewer bus stops, faster transport , convenience and shorter wait times.

Send the entire MTD board of directors to Switzerland for a week with a list of 50 different destinations. How will they learn to use the Swiss transit system in order to get to all 50 destinations, and back. Try all destinations with no phone and no computer access, as well as using any other variety of electronic gadgetry. How will their hands on experience using the inter-connected country wide and in depth urban transportation systems in Switzerland improve our local own transpiration system .
