Santa Barbara Humane, Santa Barbara County Animal Services and BUNS [have opened their doors to walk-in adopters on Saturdays.]

Santa Barbara County Animal Services and BUNS will both be open on Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Santa Barbara and Santa Maria campuses of Santa Barbara Humane will be open to the public on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m for adoptions. The clinics remain open by appointment only.

“Switching to adoptions by appointment not only kept our staff and visitors safe during the pandemic, but it also has helped reduce stress in some of our shelter animals,” said Santa Barbara Humane’s Chief Operations Officer, Dori Villalon. “But we know adoption appointments don’t work for everyone. So having one day of the week where the public can come in, look around, and hopefully adopt an animal, is really a win-win situation.”

In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, Santa Barbara Humane will limit the number of potential adopters inside a building at one time. In addition, face masks must be worn at all times.

All three organizations will continue the appointment-only policy the rest of the week. Generations of donor support have made it possible for Santa Barbara Humane to continue to serve the community throughout the pandemic through open-admission intakes, open adoptions, high-quality, affordable veterinary care, and humane behavior training.

Most animal rescues not affiliated with a local government work by appointment only. This policy is good for dogs who tend get riled up or even frantic by people walking by and browsing. It also weeds out impulse adoptions and allows for better one on one adoption counseling. Yes the amount of adoptions may be decreased a bit by the policy but they are more successful adoptions.

I think all three local shelters were not appt only before the pandemic. DAWG tried it for a while before the pandemic but had to go back to open hours before they lost their lease because their adoption numbers dropped so low. Given the choice of open hours or making an appointment, which do you think people will choose?
Some dogs bark at the people walking by, but most don't. Mostly they are barking about the stress of being cooped up in a kennel that doesn't meet the ASPCA long term kenneling requirements for 23 hrs a day.

While our bunnies were not from SBHS, our Busdogs were. Adopted in 2008 and 2009 they were great dogs and we buried the last one a few months ago. SBHS does great work and deserves any support. From donations, or better yet, a good home for an animal, any support that one can render is Golden.
