Last Saturday, both the Santa Barbara Royals JV and Varsity Ice Hockey Teams ¬– part of the LA Kings High School League – won the first round of playoffs. The varsity home game against West Ranch Wildcats ended in a 7-0 shutout. The 6th place JV Royals upset the 3rd place Burbank Cougars with a 4-3 win.

Most of the varsity goals were scored in the third period. Goalie, Jonah Marmorstein, secured the shut out making it his 4th of the season. The first two goals were made in the first and second periods by Cameron Stone, both on a power play, the first assisted by Amistad Hernandez, the second by Peter Frisell.  The game was filled with penalty calls with a total of 29 infractions, 12 by Royals and 17 by Wildcats. At one point the Wildcats had four players in the penalty box and the Royals followed suit with filling up their box with four players as well. Next Saturday the Varsity Royals head to Bakersfield to play the Knights for the semifinal.

In the JV game, the Burbank Cougars scored the first goal in the first period which was soon followed by a Royals goal made by Kennedy Frisell and assisted by Dash Lawrence. Royals held a solid lead in the second period with two more goals, a second by Frisell, assisted by Addison Headley and the third goal by Eli Heinze assisted by James Kane IV. In the third period the Cougars scored two more goals, but Kane skated through the Cougars to make the fourth goal which secured the winning goal. Next Saturday the JV Royals are headed to El Segundo to play the undefeated Strikers in the semifinals.

JV Royals coach, Erik Norton reflected on his team’s success, “Hockey is a game of passion that combines athletic ability and creativity. The JV Royals hit the ice with a deep passion and tenacity that propelled the team to victory.”

Santa Barbara High School Royals Ice Hockey JV and Varsity Win 1st Round of Playoffs

It's a combined high school team for the Santa Barbara area, and they are the Santa Barbara Royals. There just aren't enough kids from all of the schools for each school to have a team, so the team has kids from San Marcos, DP, SB, etc. Kids from any of the local high schools are eligible for the team. When the league was formed a few years ago, they just decided on the SB Royals, with the red/blue colors.
