Santa Barbara Embraces the “Dog Days of Summer” with Free Outdoor Film Series

This summer, local residents and visitors in Santa Barbara have a delightful treat waiting under the stars. UCSB Arts & Lectures, together with the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture, announces the return of its much-loved outdoor summer film series. Themed “Dog Days of Summer,” the series celebrates canine characters and their adventures, with free screenings at the picturesque County Courthouse Sunken Garden every Friday night from July 11 until August 29, at 8:30 PM.

However, take note there will be no screening on August 1 due to the Fiesta celebrations, a vibrant local tradition.

This year’s film lineup boasts a variety of dog-centric movies guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings and tickle the funny bone. Classics such as “101 Dalmatians” and heartwarming stories like “Marley & Me” are part of the selection. The lineup also includes “The Sandlot,” “Best in Show,” “My Dog Skip,” “Isle of Dogs,” and “Dog,” covering a broad spectrum of themes and narratives.

Since the series’ inception in 2010, this collaboration between UCSB Arts & Lectures and the County Office of Arts and Culture has blossomed into one of Santa Barbara’s most cherished summer traditions. The events invite community members and visitors to enjoy cinematic masterpieces in the open air, fostering a deeper connection within the community.

Filmgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and low-backed chairs, ensuring they are mindful of the green space and comfort of others. Setting up can begin at noon on the day of each screening, allowing attendees to secure the best spots and enjoy a relaxed picnic-style movie experience.

Celesta M. Billeci, the Miller McCune Executive Director of UCSB Arts & Lectures, reflects on the series’ impact, “Are you ready for some puppy love, Santa Barbara? I’m delighted that this 16th season of summer cinema in the sunken garden celebrates all things canine, and I can’t wait to see all of you there.”

Supporting this year’s series is Montecito Bank & Trust, returning as the Premiere Sponsor, along with new supporters from the Gainey Family Foundation. Janet Garufis, Chairman and CEO of MB&T, expressed enthusiasm for their continued involvement, “There’s something special about watching films under the stars – it captures the carefree spirit of the summer season. We’re proud to support an event that brings the community together.”
