San Marcos Girls Sailing Wins National Championship

By San Marcos High School

We are very proud to announce that our San Marcos High School Women’s Team are High School National Champions! The girls bested a field of 28 teams from around the United States to be crowned National Champs!

The ISSA Women’s Nationals was hosted by Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego over the weekend of October 15-16th. Teams traveled from New England, the Mid West, Florida, St. Thomas (USVI), the Northwest, and up/down California to compete.

Saturday saw light winds for the course of the days racing, only two races per division were completed. Coming out firing, SMHS’s A-division boat of Zoey Ziskind and Hope Campbell won both of their races. Nearly matching their performance was Carly Kieding and Catalina Matlock-Klein who placed a consistent second in both B-Division races.

Conditions were similar for day two with relatively light air the whole day. Four additional races were completed in both A and B Divisions bring the race count to six per division. Both boats continued to sail consistently well with Carly/Catalina winning three races in a row and Zoey/Hope finishing with two second places.

At the end of the racing on Sunday, the girls wrapped up with a nine point lead over the second place team. In addition to winning the regatta overall, both boats won their respective divisions!

We are incredibly proud of the efforts that the girls have been making in practice and training. Their hard work paid off this weekend to be crowned National Champions!
