A salmonella outbreak tied to eggs from a California-based distributor has led to 79 reported illnesses and 21 hospitalizations across multiple states, according to U.S. health officials.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging consumers to check their egg cartons as part of an ongoing recall effort.
The outbreak has been traced to organic and cage-free brown eggs distributed by August Egg Company. The eggs, sold under several brand names—including Clover, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics, Marketside, Raleys, Simple Truth, Sun Harvest, and Sunnyside—were distributed across nine states, including California and Nevada.
They were available at major retailers such as Walmart, Safeway, Ralphs, and Lucky stores with sell-by dates ranging from March 4, 2025, to June 19, 2025. The affected products have been recalled, and consumers are advised to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
The August Egg Company voluntarily recalled 1.7 million dozen eggs and diverted all potentially contaminated eggs from its processing facilities to egg-breaking plants, where they are pasteurized to eliminate bacteria. “We acted swiftly to ensure the safety of our customers,” the company stated in an announcement shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Health officials believe the true number of salmonella cases may be much higher, as many individuals recover from the illness without seeking medical treatment. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever, typically lasting up to a week. However, severe cases can lead to hospitalization and are particularly dangerous for children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Investigators noted two “sub-clusters” of infections tied to restaurants or events where eggs were served. In one notable case last month, San Diego health officials reported 37 suspected and confirmed salmonella cases linked to a single restaurant in the area. The investigation into these outbreaks is ongoing.
Consumers are urged to check their eggs for plant code numbers P-6562 or CA5330 printed on the packaging and avoid eating any eggs identified in the recall. For further details, visit the CDC website.
Whew, noticed that Trader Joe’s was NOT on the list (as you may recall…) as that’s where I get my eggs.

So now everyone knows that all of those sellers are selling the same eggs. Someone should do a price comparison for the masses !!
