SAILBOAT OCEAN RESCUE

Back in the days of square riggers, one had to get far from the coast before such a storm hit or drag at anchor until wrecked on the shore. There was no harbor, just a long and dangerous lee shore. They didn't bother to raise the anchor, simply tied a buoy onto and sailed off in a hurry. Competition between officers to decide to stop loading and run, and competition between crews as to who could remoor to their anchors the fastest.

This wind (the south-easter) is the bane of the coast of California. Between the months of November and April, (including a part of each,) which is the rainy season in this latitude, you are never safe from it, and accordingly, in the ports which are open to it, vessels are obliged, during these months, to lie at anchor at a distance of three miles from the shore, with slip-ropes on their cables, ready to slip and go to sea at a moment’s warning. The only ports which are safe from this wind are San Francisco and Monterey in the north, and San Diego in the south. "Two Years Before theMast."

I saw a sizeable sail boat anchored in Goleta Bay on Sunday and I assumed, given the impending southeaster, that they would head to the harbor for shelter. Maybe not.

exact location? West Beach? East? Graveyards or Butterfly? Just curious. A lot of those boats are junk, several are nice and liveaboards. Hope he and his boat are ok. I see this happen every year and it makes me sad to see someone lose their home/boat and the fact that they don't prepare themselves. Transient slips are $1 p/f a the marina....VTA Marina has plenty of room. They really should move during a storm, or at least drop out two hooks....heavy ground tackle helps.

oh man...i'm brain dead today...no idea how i missed that! I've only seen one sailboat anchored at GB near the point. I bet i know who it is too...that's sad though. That is NOT a place i would anchor during a storm :(

It stated Goleta Beach, west of the pier. It's nowhere near any of those locations.
