A vegetation fire that erupted on the 1400 Block of Tepusquet Road in the Santa Maria area, now referred to as the Saddle Fire, was swiftly contained by the responsive efforts of local firefighting teams. The blaze, which was reported to have initially covered an area of approximately one acre, prompted an immediate response from both ground and air support.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department received the call at 1:26 p.m. on Thursday and quickly dispatched resources to the scene. According to reports, Air Attack units were on-site to assess the situation, orchestrating the firefighting efforts from above.
The forward progress of the Saddle Fire was halted by 2:00 p.m., less than an hour after the call was made to the firefighters. The decisive action taken by the first responders ensured that the blaze was effectively stopped in its tracks.
As a result of the rapid containment, incoming resources initially called to the scene were subsequently cancelled. The teams that had arrived to combat the fire shifted their focus to the next crucial phase of the operation – containment and mop-up. This process is vital to preventing any resurgence of the fire and involves the careful extinguishing of remaining hot spots and ensuring that the edges of the fire are secure.
Fixed-wing aircraft that were initially called upon for support were canceled as ground crews successfully managed the situation without the need for aerial water or retardant drops. This cancellation is often indicative of a fire being brought under manageable control by ground operations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
