Rollover Traffic Accident Results in One Fatality

Update by the California Highway Patrol (CHP)

On June 10, 2019 at approximately 12:56 A.M., a major injury traffic collision occurred on US-101 southbound, north of Los Carneros Road.  The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, and American Medical Response Ambulance Company responded to the collision scene.

A male driver was traveling southbound in a black Chevrolet Silverado within the #1 lane.  For an undetermined reason, the vehicle drifted to the left, striking the guard rail. The driver turned right and into the #2 lane, over corrected to the left and lost control.  The vehicle collided with the guard rail a second time causing it to roll over an unknown number of times. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, sustaining major injuries.  The driver succumbed to his injuries at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

US-101, at the aforementioned location has two traffic lanes. Traffic was light, and all lanes of traffic were blocked for approximately 2 hours during the collision investigation and clean up.  During this time, traffic was diverted off the freeway on the Los Carneros Road off ramp and then immediately back onto the freeway via the on ramp.  It is unknown at this time if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision. The collision is currently under investigation.

  1. This would be REALLY REALLY creepy if this was the same guy who, last week, nearly caused his brand new black Chevy Silverado to shred the entire driver’s side of my big old Van. The guy’s truck was so new, it still had paper plates. As I was merging to the left, like a complete ass, this dude stomped on the gas and passed me on the left at that spot across from The Shoreline Cafe/near SBCC, where the two lanes heading west merge into one. I was driving the speed limit, at least a car length ahead of him and the guy sped up, honking at me and pushed past me, zooming up in between my driver’s side and the curb there. I could have reached out my window and touched his truck. I thought for sure we were going to collide. If I hadn’t jammed my foot on the brake, he would have taken out the entire side of my Van and his truck. A brazen case of road rage coupled with sheer idiocy.
