  1. Ok, so who thinks we should send out a mental health worker (or whatever you’re thinking) to apprehend the suspect? For the record SBLETSGETALONG, robbery and ASSAULT is a serious crime. I bet you’d come to realize that if you were the one that got assaulted. Defund? I don’t think so.

  2. Basic Info: I keep hearing this strawman argument from pro-law enforcement folks. I am pro-police and used to work in law enforcement so let me point out a few things. Response by a mental health worker in this case would not involve a single physically weak therapist giving a criminal a stress ball and asking them how they feel about their father or if they need a hug. It would be a joint response with an officer and an officer who’s specially trained or a capable mental health professional. They can then recognize a number of things: if the suspect is going through a manic episode, if they’re off their meds or undiagnosed for schizophrenia, if they’re an addict, etc. Then they can actually start fixing the problem through a diversion program, which have been in place for years. Usually diversion doesn’t happen until sentencing, but with a co-response unit it can happen before jail and sentencing. Or in this case before they’re let out to do it again or something more serious. What’s ironic about your comment is that a response with diversion actually saves time and money for law enforcement, the courts, and society. The mentally ill person needs to get help as a condition of being free, the police don’t need to keep responding to them acting up, they don’t take up jail/probation resources. It’s a better solution than going through a revolving door at the jail and having them repeatedly hurt others.

  3. Speaking of Social Workers responding to these kind of calls a female social worker was stabbed to death in San Francisco acouple weeks ago responding to a call for help by one of her clients I guess she thought she did not need the police to respond with her. not very smart.
