Instead of helping families, the GOP bill rips away health care, takes food off kids’ plates, and drives up the cost of everyday essentials — all to hand massive tax breaks to billionaires.
U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24) released the statement below following the final passage of the Republican reconciliation bill. Carbajal voted against the bill because it contains extreme and unprecedented cuts to essential programs like Medicaid and food assistance. The bill now heads to the President’s desk.
“Republicans in Congress passed Donald Trump’s disastrous budget bill that puts billionaires first and working families last,” said Rep. Carbajal. “This bill is a betrayal of the millions of children, seniors, and veterans who will lose their health care and food assistance. It’s a betrayal of the young people who will now shoulder the massive national debt burden this bill creates. It’s a betrayal of rural communities who will face unprecedented funding cuts to their hospitals and nursing homes. Donald Trump and congressional Republicans promised to lower the cost of living and make life easier, but this bill will do the exact opposite. Their agenda is shameful, and I’ll continue to fight back.”
In California’s 24th Congressional District, 119,000 residents benefit from food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Over 236,000 people rely on Medicaid (also known in California as Medi-Cal).

While Republican leaders claim their bill won’t cut Medicaid benefits, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office confirmed that the Republican budget would result in the largest Medicaid cuts in U.S. history (see fact sheet here). The Republican bill slashes $900 billion from Medicaid, a critical program that provides essential health care to nearly one in three Americans.
The Republican bill also makes unprecedented cuts to SNAP, which helps over 42 million Americans afford groceries.

It seems odd to even call a plan that leads to hardship and bankruptcy a budget, but that’s con doublespeak for you.
Gas prices are falling, markets are up, inflation is stopped, lots of peace happening, things are getting better it seems.

HAMMONDS – you’re either talking about a different Bill or have never read any unbiased analysis of it. Well, that or, you think it’s a good thing to kick millions from health insurance, doom rural communities with hospital closures, double the number of ICE agents and their often unconstitutional harassment and cruelty towards otherwise law abiding people, and end thousands of jobs and decades of progress in clean energy all so we can afford to give a tax cut to billionaires.

Yeah, they have actually read the bill, and know what it will do to our country. Big Beautiful Bankruptcy – the orange moron’s economic specialty.
Of course Democrats opposed it – it’s a massive mess. More telling is the number of principled Republicans who did not. Sadly, principles disappear when the Poobah slips them an autographed MAGA had and some bonus goodies for their states that others do not get. It’s called bribery. Rand Paul called Lisa Murkowski a “cheap date,” an appropriate moniker for all of those who mysteriously abandoned their principled positions and the interests of their constituents to vote for a bill that many admit they had never read.
By the way, why would Democrats vote for a bill that slashes Medicaid and other safety net provisions that they have promised to protect? Unlike the cheap dates, they kept their promises.
“Lots of peace happening?” Where? Ukraine? Nope. Gaza? Nope. Where is all this peace? Why are the wars he promised to stop “in 24 hours” still raging?
Guess some folks aren’t following what happened to our GDP over the last 80 days.
