Rep. Carbajal, New Democrat Coalition Leaders Encouraged by President Biden’s Executive Order to Restore Order at Border, Call for Republicans to Come to the Table

President Biden’s Executive Order aligns with the vision laid out in the NDC Immigration and Border Security Task Force’s Framework for Commonsense Immigration Reform, which Carbajal helped roll out in February

[On Tuesday], Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24), a Vice Chair of the New Democrat Coalition and its Immigration and Border Security Task Force, issued a statement with Task Force Chair Greg Stanton (AZ-04) and other members of the Coalition’s leadership team following the release of President Biden’s executive order that would bar migrants who cross the southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum, which will be in effect during high levels of crossing.

President Biden’s order will enable immigration officers to more easily remove those who do not have a lawful basis to remain in the country and ease the burden on border personnel.

“With today’s announcement, President Biden is taking decisive, commonsense action to restore order at the southern border at a time when Congressional Republicans continue to use it as a political football. This executive order will reduce the burden on Customs and Border Protection, immigration courts and the immigration system, and the communities we represent.

“We are encouraged by the President’s executive order, but it’s ultimately Congress’ job to address this crisis through real, sustained investments in border security and meaningful immigration reform.

“New Dems have worked tirelessly to find bipartisan consensus on policies that secure the border, support law enforcement, reform the asylum system, and provide a pathway to citizenship for those who qualify. At every turn, Congressional Republicans have blocked progress for their own political gain – and that of Donald Trump.

“It’s time for Republicans to put politics aside and finally join Democrats in passing the bipartisan border bill for the good of the American people. Guided by our Framework for Commonsense Immigration Reform, New Dems will continue fighting to find common ground and deliver bipartisan solutions to restore order at the southern border.”

New Democrat Leadership Members include Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02), Vice Chairs Sharice Davids (KS-03), Derek Kilmer (WA-06), Brad Schneider (IL-10), and  Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Leadership Members Marc Veasey (TX-33) and Marilyn Strickland (WA-10), Whip Susie Lee (NV-03), Freshman Leadership Representative Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) and Chair Emeritus Suzan DelBene (WA-01). Rep. Greg Stanton (AZ-04) is the Chair of the NDC’s Immigration and Border Security Task Force and Salud Carbajal (CA-24) is the Vice Chair of the Task Force.

As Vice Chair of the New Democrat Coalition’s Immigration and Border Security Task Force, Rep. Carbajal has been a leader in both calling for a vote on the border security package repeatedly blocked by Congressional Republicans, and crafting a framework for reforms to the U.S. immigration system.

Rep. Carbajal and the Task Force rolled out their vision for bipartisan immigration and border security reform in February, and have repeatedly called on Congressional Republicans to work across the aisle to make progress on reforming U.S. immigration policy.

Rep. Carbajal immigrated to the United States when he was five years old from Mexico. His father worked as a farmworker in Ventura County, where Carbajal joined him in the summers growing up to help pick the vegetables that feed the nation and the world.

He is one of the leading voices behind the bipartisan Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which would provide stability and fairness for farmworkers and address workforce shortages in the agriculture industry.

He also is the author of the bipartisan Protect Patriot Parents Act, which would make parents of U.S. military servicemembers eligible to adjust for Lawful Permanent Resident status, preventing potential deportations or separations of military families.

He is also a cosponsor and champion of the bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act, which would permanently codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for the nearly 800,000 young people who came to the United States as children.

Rep. Salud Carbajal represents California’s 24th Congressional District, encompassing Santa Barbara County and portions of San Luis Obispo County and Ventura County. He is a member of the Agriculture and Armed Services Committees, as well as the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he serves as the top Democrat on the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee.

The New Democrat Coalition is comprised of 100 center-left House Democrats committed to breaking through gridlock to deliver results for Americans.

  1. Congressman there are too many loopholes in this executive order to change the mess created at the border by this administration over the last 3.5 years. You approved HR2 last year which was meaningful border control. Unfortunately, it continues to sit on Schumers desk. We need real solutions on so many problems created by this administration and the reason we vote for you. Please get serious about resolving these issues.

  2. For 3.5 years we have had to listen to the Biden administration, primarily through Mayorkas, tell us the border is secure. Now, as the election approaches, the Dems are trying to convince us that, in some way, it’s the fault of the GOP.
    Sorry, we aren’t buying it.

    • It’s just more smoke from the crooked mafia. “Fixing” a problem that was purposely created. After touting they didn’t have the power all these years. And this executive order is bogus anyway. It hasn’t stopped anything. President Trump had the border on lockdown as much as possible, and will again. If the dems were serious, they would start the largest deportation in history. But they need those illegal votes, so those they let in, stay.

      • The saddest part is that people like Steve_O aren’t just saying such nonsensical things to be provocative or satirical, they actually believe them to be true. Our education system has truly failed us.

        • First off, I agreed with your statement….why the lefty lib loon speak at me? Second, way to follow suit with the insults. Third I’m probably older and certainly wiser than you and the other croc wearers on this once fun website.

          • STEVEO – “Third I’m probably older and certainly wiser” – Yet you think all people with “Anonymous” on their comment are the same person…. LOL! Yeah simmer down, Einstein.

Love your complaining about insults right after calling them a “lefty lib loon”

          • Anon #2 here. My observation was intended for Anon, too – and any others making the same unfounded claims on this site and others. And calling your comment nonsensical is not intended as an insult; you were stating what you believe. I was just questioning how we could reach such a point that so many people actually do believe that non-citizens can vote, for example. That alone is ridiculous. It discredits anything else you may have to say. What happened to our ability to separate fact from fiction – to think critically? That’s all.

      • STEVE-O – why are you lying? What is it about you Cons that cause you to insist on flat out lying even when you know for a fact you’re lying?

Is that just more “wisdom” from you or are you really reading on Parler or elsewhere that illegal immigrants can vote? Is that what you really believe?

I’m honestly asking, so it’s totally fine for you to say, “Oh, that’s what I was told or read” or “Yes, illegal immigrants can vote, despite the law saying they can’t.”

Really curious though. Can you answer the question?

  3. It IS Biden’s fault!!! He said several years ago that he had done all he can do but suddenly now, months before an election, he suddenly got the executive power? PATHETIC.On day one, he canceled the Stay in Mexico and the Caravans cam in the millions.
He is ABSOLUTELY to blame. Blaming this on Republicans is downright comedy.
