Recreational Marijuana Store Openings?

By an edhat reader

Does anyone know when the recreational marijuana stores–I know three have been approved and are in the process of preparing to open–will be up and running? I would like to buy a little but don’t want to bother with fake MM cards or the shady characters running ads on CL.

  1. Do you mean fake as is in not real/legitimate or fake as in you don’t have a medical condition that requires one? I have a card and it is very real. recreational storefronts of Santa Barbara aren’t opening until 2019.

  2. Medical. With proper credentials and 24 hour waiting period. Keep in mind that the Federal Government considers cannabis to be a drug with high risk of abuse and no known medical value. So don’t you medical people dare use cannabis to get a buzz. Just go to a bar, drink up and drive right home.

  3. The FDA recently approved a medication called Epidiolex, which is to be used to reduce the number of seizures for sufferers of 2 rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome, both of which affect mostly children (some of whom have 50 seizures/week and developmental problems). I actually watched a webinar on the Epilepsy Foundation’s web site a week ago because I am an adult with epilepsy that is not completely controlled by medication, and the medications have some unpleasant side effects. I would not qualify for Epidilex, because I don’t have either of the syndromes, but I was hoping that since I live in CA, where CBD is legal, it might be prescribed. What I learned from the webinar is that there is a concern about purity of products not created by the manufacturer of Epidiolex — the Epilepsy Foundation cited research done in CA that showed that a large portion of the products sold were impure for various reasons, including pesticides. Also, even though MM is legal in CA, it’s not in the entire US, so a doctor prescribing it could lose their license because of the lack of federal legality. This webinar is available on the Epilepsy Foundation’s web site if people are interested in learning more about Epidiolex or CBD.

  4. Fake MM card? There are real ones that only require a short online meeting and $45 for one year’s rx, and the delivery places in town are cheap and easy to order from. Or you could keep waiting for the rec centers to open.

  5. Or you could go to Thousand Oaks or numerous places in the SF Valley, or LA where the CA Cannabis law has been implemented. For SB area, you’re gonna be waiting a long time, perhaps until the end of next year. Of course there’s always Oregon, Washington, Seattle or the entire country of Canada.

  6. 3 storefronts have been approved for SB city proper. Not opening until sometime in 2019 at the soonest. Closest recreational dispensary is in Port Hueneme. It is open and selling recreational those over 21 year old and holding valid drivers license. Good luck.

  7. TaxiOnna, it’s good to know that the State is regulating the quality of the product, because that has been a big concern, but the conundrum for doctors still stands — they can legally prescribe it in CA, but still be in violation of Federal laws. That means that no doctor at one of the large seizure centers (usually affiliated with universities or large hospitals) will be prescribing anything but the drug that has been approved for those 2 syndromes. I know someone who got his CBD prescription online, but I’m not willing to go that route to treat my condition. Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait for more research to be done on adults with other forms of epilepsy.
