Just got a call from 310-245-7842 ( caller ID is Cell Phone, CA), it is a man's voice saying he is from a reverse mortgage company, and he asks if one can hear him. DO NOT SAY "Yes." You will be recorded, and it is my understanding the nefarious company will use it against you for fraudulent purposes. Heard about it on NPR, so it must be true.

Recorded Phone Scam is Back

I assume the OP had the best of intentions when posting this, but...This type of scam has been reported for quite some time now, even on major networks. There used to be a time when journalist verified their stories and sources but this is no longer true. Scary = ratings and so the scarier the the better. The phrase "Can you hear me?" is a very common one and so putting fear into people that they might hear that phrase and make the "mistake" of answering yes makes good social media trolling. There is no validity to the story. Here is the link to Snopes http://www.snopes.com/can-you-hear-me-scam/

If you don't know anyone in the area code, don't answer and block the call.

When we get these types of calls we pickup, don’t say anything for a few seconds and hang up. If we don’t recognize the number we don’t say anything.... works for us.

Yes. It's "James" from a reverse mortgage company. If James calls you and asks "can you hear me" just say "No." again and again and again.
