Beginning on October 17, the City will begin realigning the roadway in preparation of the construction of the multiuse path south of Modoc Road connecting the City’s portion to Santa Barbara County’s Multiuse Path.

This realigning project may cause traffic delays daily between Calle De Los Amigos and Via Senda from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. October 17-21.

I just have to wonder with all these multi million dollar bike paths how much has the vehicle traffic decreased? What I see isn mainly in weekend more people out on the bike paths but Monday - Friday barely anyone. I wonder how many elderly people, disabled people , people that can’t use a bike to go to Costco or the grocery store, how these people appreciate seeing their tax dollars being spent.

wow you guys sure go bonkers over a bike path construction. are your lives that mundane and boring to where a simple bike path being built ruffles your feathers this much? I mean read some of these posts (or all of them). arguing politics, discussing political history, and one whining complaint after another. Yall keep crying about this and I'll be happily riding on that path. Trees there are not indigenous. Pretty much ends right there. Trees grow, live, die, are replaced. Just like you and me. They take some out, replant some native species. But that concerns you so much that you protest and complain and argue? You do realize that there are global wars, food shortages, homelessness, violent crimes, hunger, nuclear threats all happening right now and all of that affects you, but yeah go on and keep complaining about a bike path.....SMH

ZEROHAWK: Ah . . . The good ole red herring/abandonment of the original argument. Please read up on how non-native trees provide insects as food for foraging migratory birds. Please accept the fact that Monarch butterflies prefer and require Eucalyptus trees as aggregation/roosting sites. You may exalt and rejoice in your preference for asphalt and concrete rather than trees and wildlife habitat, but the reality is ------ Santa Barbarans know that we need to protect what little green, thriving open space we have left. The removal of iconic, majestic, healthy trees and the inevitable negative impact as a result must be avoided. The County must implement an Environmental Impact Report. Hence, a truthful assessment of significant impacts will be known and addressed. Only then will a superior resolution for any project along Modoc Rd. move ahead.

I am really looking forward to the completion of the path - 3 of our family members bike regularly along Modoc for commuting.

ZERO - fair points, but trees aren't like you and me. They can live for centuries and are home to many species. Granted, I've found young squirrels in my beard, but I still won't like to be 400 years old.

Also.... BENGHAZI.

The path along Las Positas is absolutely amazing to ride. Smooth, safe, pretty, well thought out. I can't wait to see this connector finished to be able to go almost completely cross town on super safe paths! GREAT JOB SB!!!

This is about bike paths and saving the trees, not politics, I hope that as the elections get closer Edhat either leaves all political statements on or none. Censoring to their beliefs are not letting everyone point of view be heard. Let’s try to be nice and respect others point of view without being rude.we are becoming a mean society my way or the high way type of mentality. How did we let this get so out of control that families are enemy’s over politics.

MEBK - there have been no comments removed on this thread. What are you talking about? Further, even when they are removed, they aren't deleted. This is not censorship. Banning books and rewriting history textbooks in Texas IS.

It's not "censorship" if people are deleted for violating terms of service and policies, specifically spreading misinformation. Every single platform with discussion has rules like this. Getting tired of people screaming about "censorship"

The entire realignment project from Cliff/Las Positas to what will now be Via Senda is a nightmare waiting to happen. The condensed lane size designed as an attempt to slow cars down, has inadvertently put bicyclist at greater risk as they are now much closer to moving vehicles. Drivers cannot effectively stay in their lanes now that the lanes have lost about 2 feet of width. Bicyclist need more room not less.

So you're not riding in the roadway. That's fine. However, the reason they left the bike lanes is because they do not want bicyclist traveling at 14-30mph utilizing the same pathway as say a walking couple with a stroller. They want fast bicycles in the street. Buy everyday cars and trucks are now needing to navigate the smaller lane width as the empty space that used to be to the right of your car (giving clearance to bicycles) has been moved to the center of the street. And trust that paint will not either effectively slow down traffic, but it will force compliant drivers to drive closer to bicycles moving in the bike lane. As a side note, because so many cars are now being observed straddling the lanes, there will probably be a repair/replacement project sooner rather then later for the lane reflectors as they're now being driven over more frequently.

That has not been my experience - but I will admit that I am someone who likes to bicycle, tries to bike home from work 1-2x a week, and prefers the dedicated path to the bike lane.

Because I run/walk/cycle, I am extra aware and cautious of cyclists in the bike lane. (As everyone should be, really.)

Probably because his past actions have demonstrated that he has nobody's best interest but his own in mind. It's all that oil company money going to waste if he's not lobbying for them, from his point of view.

On Facebook and other discussion boards I've seen the Modoc Preserve "activists" openly support and praise Mike Stoker solely because he said he supports their cause. Solely. The dude who started the "lock her up" chant and believes in all the GOP lies. Ridiculous people, can't take this cause seriously anymore.

Culo: What you point out is a good thing and proves that "reaching across the aisle" in an adult manner c-a-n and does work! For me, that's a good thing rather than the ol' Us vs Them syndrome. Fixating on differences does not work but joining forces for the good of all is what every reasonable person wants. United we stand.....divided we all end up losing. Peace to all on this glorious day!

Opposition to this project has strange bedfellows it appears MAGA (stoker) and the radical environmentalist are united.

3:59- Why wouldn't someone support a local politician that supported their cause? That's the closest a person can get to supporting a cause. BTW, I think it's Chris Christie who started that chant... Either way, the Clintons are golden. They NEVER did anything you wouldn't do!

If the BOS put the second bike path up on Modoc Road, next to the first bicycle path, then this is good news. If they insist on trespassing onto the SB Land Trust nature preserve then the lawyers will have their day in court. A full EIR will be sought.

HOMEBOY7: LCMWC retains the right to create access roads within The Modoc Preserve. This is true. However, access roads and building a multi-use path within The Preserve are two different animals. PLEASE NOTE: The Land Trust for Santa Barbara holds the conservation easement " . . . to keep this land open and undeveloped for community benefit."------------------
"Who owns the Modoc Preserve?
The Modoc Preserve along Modoc Road is owned by the La Cumbre Mutual Water Company. After reviewing various options for this land and seeking the approval of its shareholders, the Water Company in 1999 granted a conservation easement to the Land Trust to keep this land open and undeveloped for community benefit. The Water Company retains the right to build facilities like water wells, pipelines, and access roads, and otherwise, the land will remain as open space. And the expected lifetime of the Canary Island palms has not been addressed. They are at least 94 years old at this point; they might be mostly dead within a decade.

Be careful what you wish for. Alignment A is entirely within the public right-of-way and does not touch the Modoc Preserve. That option would remove almost all of the Canary Island Date Palms that line Modoc. Alignment B removes many fewer trees, and only 5 within the Modoc Preserve. The county, and myself, prefers Alignment B but if lawsuits arrive then they may be forced into the other option.

I see nothing but smiles from kids, families, grandfathers, moms, and anyone else using the Las Positas path. The separation from cars creates confidence in my kids riding ability and protects there lives.

Where is info on the path from Calle De Los Amigos to Via Senda? The linked page only mentions the section from Las Positas to Calle De Los Amigos. The new bike path along Modoc that has been discussed heavily over the past few months is only going as far as Via Senda.

Ah, I found it. This section is phase I of the new bike path being constructed along Modoc. I guess that previously I had only seen plans for phase II. “The path will start where the City of Santa Barbara path ends near Calle De Los Amigos and connect to the Obern Trail Bike Path across from Encore Drive. Phase I: Calle De Los Amigos to Via Senda (1/3 mile) is currently under construction, and Phase II: Via Senda to Encore (3/4 mile) is set to begin construction in summer 2023.” https://www.countyofsb.org/3429/Modoc-Multi-Use-Path
