By the City of Santa Barbara

The City is developing a design for bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements at the approaches to the Castillo Street undercrossing at U.S. Highway 101 on Castillo and Haley Streets. Castillo Street is one of the busiest streets in the City and is a Vision Zero Priority Corridor.

Super bad area to consider any sort of expanded biking arrangements. I understand people have to get to work, school etc but the traffic is bad enough under there that when the bikers don’t take the sidewalks it’s problematic. Especially since so many of our neighbors have no idea which lane to be in when heading under towards Montecito.

Have you considered that more people might want to ride a bike to work or school if were safer to do so? This would have the side-effect of reducing traffic.

This could even be an opportunity to improve traffic flow with the right design changes.

Bury it and build an overpass. Yes, I'm being a bit facetious, although it'd be an improvement as over the years every attempt has been made to fix, repair and improve that underpass to no avail. If nothing else, make it cars only and build a foot bridge over the freeway or tunnel under in a separate corridor. As SBSTONER mentioned, it's a real problem attempting to coexist pedestrians and an abundant amount of traffic in this important cross-freeway artery.

Again, as a local you should know there is no way to do an over crossing unless you could close off Montecito, Haley and all of the off ramps. This has been repeatably explained before and should likely be other edhat clarifications.

Bicyclist before entering, the underpass should be provided with tire coverings that have spikes so they don’t slide ,
Because the city or state can’t figure out how to do anything with the ground water after they spent millions and millions of dollars and it’s very slippery and very dangerous even for the cars getting on and off their

I believe the water issue is a result of the street going below the water table. I think the cobblestones were put in to let the water seep through instead of waiting for it to destroy the road surface. Not great for bikes, but unless there's a better solution it's what we've got.

Proletariat, what does "I believe " mean. You are evidently new here as this issue comes up at least every year...It is an underground spring and not stoppable with an easy fix. If it were a water table issue we would have the same thing at the Carrillo under crossing. the elevations are almost the same and the water table at lower State St. under crossing was readily solved.

This city should do a 2fer and figure out how to implement a bike lane on Cabrillo underpass(where are they completely just redid it and spent millions of dollars as well) where they forgot to put the bike lane in maybe it’s the same planner that forgot about the exit lane on the city parking lot across from the county building?

Are you talking about Carrillo? Or are you talking about the extremely narrow train bridge on Cabrillo over by Coast Village? Nothing can be done about that until the train bridge is rebuilt

How about stacking a bike lane over the pedestrian lane or vice versa. It'd have to be high over the off and onramps for truckers to miss.
Maybe not a workablle idea but it never hurts to draw it out and see
