Public Health Reports 82 New COVID-19 Cases

By edhat staff

The Santa Barbara Public Health Department (PHD) is reporting a record high of 82 new cases within the county today. This brings the total number of cases to 2,253.

According to the numbers, 55 of the new cases are located in Santa Maria. 11 are in Santa Barbara, and the rest are scattered in lower numbers throughout the county.

Of the total 2,253, there are 989 cases belonging to the Federal Prison in Lompoc and 702 cases belonging to the City of Santa Maria alone. The north county of Santa Barbara makes up 969 cases, approximately 77% of the total community cases.

Currently, there are 211 active cases within the community. Of those, 61 are in the hospital with 17 in the intensive care unit (ICU), and 115 are pending information. There have been 22 deaths overall.

Yesterday PHD announced expanded personal care services would not reopen this Friday as the increase in hospitalization rates rendered the county disqualified from doing so. It’s unclear when these services will reopen.

  1. No uptick in fatalities – yet. You do realize that most people with severe COVID-19 infections don’t drop dead immediately, don’t you? An uptick in hospitalization will almost inevitably lead to an uptick in deaths, since we have few effective therapies as yet.

  2. M-Cubed and others- you can look at World of Meters by both country and then look at USA, which can then be broken down state-by-state, and will also show county-by-county stats (including Santa Barbara and every other county in California), with numbers, and graphs indicating cases and deaths, along with percentages of active and inactive cases. It is updated every few hours and you can compare the trends for the past two days to up-to-the hour information. Much easier to use than other sources. It also has projections, for what those are worth, for cases, deaths, hospital resource use, and social distancing. So if anyone wants to claim it is only worldwide or by nation-wide only, you might actually want to look at it before you give false information about its reporting features. Here is the link to California alone from their website: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/california/

  3. SBGAL totally agree. I was really wanting to patronize businesses but from what I’ve seen many are just not doing what they are supposed to or don’t care. I’ve whittled down my options to only a few now, who I’ve observed and trusted. I don’t get it. With the economic hit they’ve taken you’d think they’d do everything possible to show they care and are keeping us safe. I guess those who don’t care/mind can patronize them but I won’t be. Not now.

  4. I’m still surprised that after hundreds of years of Coronaviruses. 5 World wide pandemics Since 1900. With all our technology & medical science that the answer is stay home & wear a mask.
And there is no empirical evidence that this is the right answer. Shutting down the world economy & hiding as a “guess” that it will what, cure the Coronaviruses?
And no one can answer if a mask actually works as “everyone” has been washing their hands more, cleaning grocery stores and gas station pumps & actually staying home when they have symptoms.
So the mask, how does that protect you if you touch something g at home or in your car, then go shopping and touch a bunch of stuff then touch your face when you take your mask off?
Could simple hygiene & actually cleaning surfaces be the answer?
Now they say the “breathable” masks allow water droplets to escape. So if your wearing a cloth mask with a vent you are not protecting others and you’re not protected because the air you’re breathing is not filtered.
The purpose of staying home was to “flatten” the curve. There is no cure for the viruses.
So the “experts” say hide at home until it goes away.
That’s the “sound medical” advice, hide & maybe you won’t get sick.
Wow, I’m glad they paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for their educations.
Bottom line: if you are concerned, wear a proper mask that protects you or stay home & order delivery & sanitize the good before you eat it.

  5. Well, on a positive note – the flu seems to have disappeared. After 20 years, the CA Health Department even ceased tracking it in March, a month and a half early. So did Santa Barbara County. So that’s a good thing….

  6. Big uptick in younger age groups. Since this virus attack epithelium cells, it is a blood disease and can be their damaging organs even if the person doesn’t appear to have symptoms. It’s also starting to show up in children as a formerly rare disease increases. The hormonal push to congregate in the young is working against them. Perhaps if they cover their noses as well as their mouths if they are working with the public, it will keep them from killing older people who must buy food, go to the drugstore and such.

  7. These are numbers that are expected with sporadic testing going on, and use that for you conclusion? If all 456,000 county residents were tested on the same day every week for a year, then you could chart this.An uptick in testing will lead to more cases. This simple fact seems to have evaded all the “high information” people on here, which leads me to believe they are gullible people really.

  8. These numbers are alarming. We’re trying to patronize some local restaurants after they’ve suffered so much from closures but it’s so disheartening when you see servers and bar tenders working with their masks down below their noses. This has happened everywhere we’ve been. I can’t believe that the training isn’t better. A mask below the nose might as well be no mask at all. Last weekend I watched a bar tender a very nice restaurant accept a handshake from a customer who reached across the bar and then he just continued on making drinks without washing his hands. I really wanted to say something to the manager but I also don’t want to be a “Karen”. It really makes me not want to go out at all.

  9. SBGAL, calling out an employee in a food & drink serving establishment for flagrant disregard for public health guidelines is not being a “Karen” (that would be a white woman calling the police on a black person for doing something she just disapproves of or is inconvenienced by, something that could result in the black person being placed in extreme danger of a brutal reaction). If a bartender or server can’t be bothered to worry about their potential effect on customers’ health and safety they should be dismissed or sharply reprimanded and re-educated to the fact the mask is not there for their protection but for everyone else’s.

  10. Oceandrew – Actually Chico is right on that point…and your comparison makes no sense. More testing will lead to more positives (that’s an obvious given). That being said, what matters is the ICU bed utilization, as the total numbers don’t mean much as the vast majority of people haven’t been tested.

  11. OK, let me get this straight. According to World of Meters, which I have followed almost daily, the total number of cases keeps rising, but the daily totals have remained about the same since mid-May, even with increased testing. All the while, daily deaths have been on a downward trend during the same period. Yet the LOCKDOWNLUNATICS keep ringing the alarm bell and our good friend Tedros at the WHO says this morning we are entering a “new and dangerous phase”. All the while “serious/active” active cases have remained the same @ 2% and the death rate, the most important statistic, among “active/closed” cases has declined to 9% since the world-wide peak on April 17. But, yes, keep that panic and fear going if you think it will help Joe get elected and keep Gavin in office.

  12. Actually, a “Karen” is a sneer on a middle-aged white woman who is/acts privileged, entitled; can be racist but not necessarily; usually, calling the manager on an employee would be a “Karen” so the OP was right to fear to be stereotyped.

  13. Haha I downvoted you just because. But anyhow, as someone who has been and still remains a big fan of masks and social distancing, and was in diligent self-isolation for three months, I started hitting the gym as soon as it opened back up. Still wont go to restaurants and the only store I enter is the supermarket. Gym is by far the riskiest thing I’ve done since March. Point being, aside from social distancing measures, masks and limits on participants/customers/etc. at any business, the ‘lockdown’ isn’t so much a lockdown anymore. Unless you want your nails did. We’re in phase three. You should be able to go about business as usual. You cite to a few sources that monitor the virus on a world and nation-wide scale – but we’re in SB, so you can stop acting like wearing a mask and not being able to breathe right in my face without me having an issue with it you is a massive affront to your liberties.
