In recognition of the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) delivery of medical services since 1926 and the Health Care for the Homeless program since 1989, the Board of Supervisors proclaimed August 4 -10, 2019, as National Health Center Week in Santa Barbara County.
The Board acknowledged the PHD’s five Health Care Centers and three shelter-based clinics as the health care home of more than 25,000 County residents offering high quality, affordable, comprehensive primary and specialty health care in our County’s underserved communities.
To mark the event, the PHD Health Care Centers will host a number of National Health Center Week events that celebrate the ways they are “Rooted in Communities”. The activities, including health fairs, patient appreciation events, free health screenings and more, are part of a national campaign to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s Health Centers and the dedicated staff who bring health care to the medically underserved. “Santa Barbara County Health Care Centers are on the front lines of national public health challenges – whether caring for veterans, providing opioid treatment, or responding to natural disasters,” said Dr. Douglas Metz, Deputy Director for Santa Barbara County Public Health.
“All are welcome at our health centers. They are a safe and healing space for everyone we serve. This is the essence of what healthcare should be, and what we are celebrating during National Health Center Week.”
