Being present during active gunfire is a terrifying situation to be in, but dealing with the aftermath of one occurring near one’s home brings with it a variety of extra stressors. That’s why we have set up a Compassion Center in the community room of the affected apartment complex from 12pm-8pm on May 8th and 9th.
The Center is staffed with trained Psychological First Aid volunteer responders that anyone can approach and talk to for support. This service provides a casual, comfortable environment for people who would not normally seek help. SBRN volunteers can also help individuals with logistical problems like where to sleep if they can’t access their apartment.
These services are open to anyone affected by this event; residents, children, San Marcos students and staff, and first responders. SBRN can also provide recommendations for counselors or therapists if more structured, long term support is needed.
