I have only seen a praying mantis in Santa Barbara twice. Have other people seen them? A large female has been camping out in a bush, and she had two gentlemen callers.

The first one to mate with her lost his head. We found a tomato worm on the plant and put it near her, and she consumed it in short order. The second male then mated and seems to have survived. The female is still in the bush, but the males cannot be found.

I haven't had a praying mantis recently, but I have had a lot of walking sticks! Unfortunately my young cat keeps finding them too, so I have to move any I find to taller plants!

As a child, I brought several mantis eggs clusters into the house and put them in my mother's Boston fern. When they hatched, in addition to catching big time h' from my mother, I was able to observe that the newly hatched babies were cannibalistic and ate each other. (The rest got vacuumed up by my mother.)

It's hard to tell the scale. The large green ones are the ones that come in on plants or are bought as insect predators. Unfortunately they also eat our local, tiny, brown preying mantises.
