Update: Police Activity on Cleveland Elementary Campus

Cleveland Elementary School (Google Maps)

This morning at approximately 2:10 A.M., Santa Barbara Police Communications received several calls reporting “shots fired” and “fireworks” being heard in the vicinity of Cleveland Elementary School on Alameda Padre Serra.

Within minutes, responding Santa Barbara Police Officers located a single male victim on the campus with a gunshot wound. The victim required emergency care and was transported to Cottage Hospital.  His condition remains unknown.

Santa Barbara Police Detectives and Forensic Investigators are processing the crime scene within the campus.

Preliminary investigative leads suggest the incident does not appear to be random—there is NO imminent threat to the school or surrounding community. The incident does not involve anyone associated with the school.

Sherriff’s Department air resources are being utilized to visually and geographically process evidence. Some within the community may hear and see a helicopter engaging in low-fly-over maneuvers. In that capacity, the helicopter is not being used to track outstanding subjects.

The investigation remains ongoing.

  1. So, why did I get deleted for asking about where the school actually is? The Cleveland my grandson went to is just off upper State Street. Not on APS as reported here; that used to be Jefferson when my cousins went there (many years ago) and then became a campus for Brooks Institute. I thought maybe someone could clear up my confusion. Are 2 schools named Cleveland.

  2. FLICKA—I think you may be confusing Cleveland School with Jefferson. Jefferson was on APS, south of Moreno Road. Cleveland is also on APS, but way to the south, above the little five-points roundabout. I think the school your grandson went to in San Roque was Peabody.

  3. Does it really seem like a good idea to kids to drag their victims up to an elementary school to shoot them? Definitely a situation that is going to make everyone mad and try to find the perps. Hopefully the victim ID’d the shooters.

  4. Someone heard “fireworks” last night and called the police. It must have been a slow night, the police decided to send someone to instigate. They found a gunshot victim. They survived! Who is running the show at the police department. Our parks and schools are a disaster!

  5. This is not the old Jefferson school which is now Santa Barbara Middle School. This is Cleveland on APS up above Salinas where it has always been. Also the only school in San Roque near State has is and has always been Peabody, now a charter school helping to keep our little cottages near the avg. home price.
