After a tense standoff, Santa Barbara Police arrested a man who reportedly had a gun after barricading himself in a homeless shelter.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday, police responded to the PATH shelter in the 800 block of Cacique Street for a man inside with a gun. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered a male was barricaded on the second floor of the building.
Sections of the shelter were evacuated as a SWAT vehicle arrived. Approximately an hour and a half later the suspect was apprehended without any injuries or shots fired.
According to scanner traffic, a BB gun was found but no firearm. A 27-year-old Santa Barbara man was taken into custody for unrelated charges stemming from a warrant.

Kudos to the SBPD for not going in with guns blazing on the report that the suspect had a gun. That’s what might have happened in other cities in this country. We should be proud of our professional PD. They may sometimes make missteps but their philosophy is “community-oriented” and “dedicated to service”. Imho, it’s important to praise as well as criticize.
