They are held for a minimum of ten days under Protective Custody, as City and/or County Animal Control officials, in conjunction with Coroner's Office, try to find next of kin. PC hold can be extended. They MAY come up for adoption. The same is done for dogs belonging to arrested people, and women who go to shelters. If contact and plans are made, hold can be extended, usually not for long. The shelter/state does not yet have custody or ownership of these dogs, or any dog in this situation. The dogs are Safe! People work hard for them.
