This part of West Goleta is getting scary! 2 fatal hit and runs in the last couple months and now this? Might be time to put up more stop signs or something?
I routinely take Foothill/Cathedral Oaks as my commute between SB and Goleta. With the lockdown, I’ve noticed a lot more pedestrian and bike traffic. I’ve lost track of how many vehicles aimlessly drift into the bike lane before swerving back into the car lane. Many times cyclists ride side-by-side putting the left cyclist closer to vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists need to be ultra vigilant because of the drivers who simply don’t put enough effort to drive safely on that stretch. Don’t count on drivers stopping for you at crosswalks, you are invisible to them.
It does seem to be like a lot of motorists are not paying attention. At first, in my neighborhood, I saw people driving far more defensively than usual, because of more pedestrians and cyclists. Not as many people were running the stop signs. Now, however, I often see people driving very fast through the neighborhood (because: not many cars, and no school in session), or actively looking at their phones while driving. "Hey there are fewer cars out, I can drive like a jerk!"
It does seem that the reckless drivers are out in full force. The other day when I was driving up State Street, I got in the turn lane to turn right on Haley. The next thing I know, some bro in a souped up truck turned from the outer lane, cutting me off. When I had my chance, I actually confronted the guy, and what do you know, he was gabbing on his cell phone. He wasn't even trying to be discreet about it, and he apparently had "no idea" that he cut me off. Jerk.
I was about six car lengths away from witnessing this accident. The cyclist was about 75 years old and had some bleeding from the fall and he seemed rather rattled and fuzzy in his speech. Paramedics attended to him. The wierd thing was that the woman who appeared to have clipped him drove away before the police and ambulance came I got a photo of her and her car. I shared with the police but I don't know if they ever tracked her down. She was about 65, white hair in a bob, and was driving an older model blue Toyota sedan. If I could post the photo I would. I told the police that maybe she shouldn't be driving! I live on Cathedral Oaks and people act like it is a freeway. This stretch needs more patrolling and police giving speeding tickets. It is just ridiculous.
