Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Amtrak Train Near Milpas Street in Santa Barbara

On February 1, 2026, at approximately 1:34 pm, The Santa Barbara Police Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call regarding an AMTRAK train that struck at pedestrian on Milpas Street at the railroad tracks.

Santa Barbara Police, Santa Barbara Fire and AMR Paramedics responded to the emergency. The pedestrian had tragically succumbed to their injuries. 

Milpas St is currently closed and will remain closed until the investigation can be completed and the train can be safely moved.

The deceased adult male’s identity is being withheld pending the notification of their next of kin.

This is a tragic incident, and the Santa Barbara Police Department would like to remind everyone to please use extreme caution when you are crossing the railroad tracks and please abide by the warning signals at the railroad crossings.

The Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

  1. Given the history of SB being a mecca for “suicides by train”…. since jumping off the 154 bridge got stopped…
    … It seems premature to call it an “accident”.
    morel ikely a deliberate life ending event?
    unless the person was pushed?
    or was wearing earbuds and texting? or was running and tripped?
    so story could just as fairly said that a person walked into path of honking train…
    ie train engineers usually see the victims and blare horns.
    and it would be fairer to avoid saying the train hit the victim – that sounds like murder?
    ie train collided with an oncoming pedestrian going the wrong way?
    i still think Amtrak should have foam cow catchers on its trains. it worked for cows.
    a sad story regardless.
