  1. This besides being a continuing issue happened at one of the two worst times of the day delaying 3 different trains. First making the Starlight No. 11, 3&1/2 hrs late to LA, Surfliner 792 at least 2&1/4 hrs late to San Diego and Surliner 777 over 3 hrs late into SLO.

  2. Suicide by train–if that’s what this was–is a traumatizing thing to do to its innocent engineer and anyone else who has no choice but to witness or deal with the carnage. Trains are like oil tankers, aircraft carriers and all very large moving things. They cannot stop on a dime. Although it’s rarely a good idea, I have no quarrel with anyone who does away with himself if they make a point of considering others their penultimate act.

  3. The city police and CHP have been notified many times about the huge encampment in this location. Union Pacific knows. Sad that this happened. I think the powers that be need to take responsibility. If this encampment is allowed, and people are throwing themselves in front of the trains, then these agencies need to look at their failures and take some of the blame. Solution? Give 24 hours notice and then get in there and clear it out. If the homeless who live here panhandle at the off ramps, again endangering themselves and the passing drivers, then take them in. These people have obvious mental health issues and are a danger to themselves. If they light their warming fires and the flames spread into the Samarkand or the homes near Modoc, it will be too late.
