  1. LUVADUCK – why is there a difference? And difference to whom? The driver will be forever traumatized by this, regardless of the reason the person was on the 101. Are you saying it makes a difference in how YOU feel about this? If so, pretty cruel.

  2. Sac- It makes a difference because more often than not pedestrians killed on the 101 are crossing from a homeless encampment. One of the many dangers these camps pose to those that reside in them, those that live near them, those that drive by and first responders who have to pick up the pieces. Cal trans, Southern Pacific RR and local government need to clean these camps up and move people out.
Ca law says you cannot stop people from sleeping in public places without a sheltered bed for them to go to. There must be empty warehouses where cots can be set up to move people off of the streets. Those that don’t want to comply can move along somewhere else.

  4. Very sad. RIP.
I have seen three pedestrians on 101 in the last month. Usually around bird refuge area but once by Mission. All vagrants.
Different story but about a year ago or so I saw a well kitted out JOGGER on the 101 going against traffic on the southbound side of the freeway. By the bird refuge. We called 911 on him.

  5. Sac, this constant “why does it matter – you are insensitive and cruel for asking” thing is really… eh, what’s the word. I don’t know. It does matter. If it was a suicidal maniac then they probably couldn’t be stopped. If, say, instead 90% of the people killed on the freeway are vagrants then people might want to know so they can adjust their votes for governor, policy, etc. accordingly. Having all the facts is not some evil thing for people to want.

  6. SBTOWNIE – it’s simply ghoulish in my opinion to fill the comment section with demands for information about the recently deceased. Save it for another thread. You do you, go for it. But I just think it’s cruel to make this political at this point. It’s a trend here, and I know you love it, so have it. But don’t fault me for my opinions.

  7. SBTOWNIE – but would it matter as to this person and his/her family? Does anyone not know that homelessness, mental illness and the camps along the freeway aren’t a problem? What new fact could you glean from this that would enable you to do anything differently about the problems we are all aware of?

  8. TRANSPARENT – you’re right. Maybe I flew off the handle a bit and mistook what Luvaduck was trying to say, but from her callous previous comments, I’m still pretty sure I wasn’t. Either way, yes. we need to learn how to address tragedies like this. The encampments have been the cause of many recent deaths and fires. But what do we do? The homeless problem is not an easy fix as many try to portray it as. We can’t simply haul them and their belongings away. Where would we put them? Do we instead crack down on this illegal “camping?” OK, fine. Say we do, then how to we prosecute them? Write them tickets they’ll never pay? Throw them in jail and further crown our system and drain our tax dollars? It’s not an easy problem to solve.

  9. Not even going to engage you Sac. Why do you even bother to read the news since you think we’re all ghouls for wanting to know why and how tragedies happen so we can collectively think or vote our way to reducing them. Clearly you are in the minority here. Most people want to know more information about what happened so they can shape their world view, votes, etc. in accordance with reality no matter how grim the truth is. No one is advocating for arresting the homeless in this thread. The accusations you are making are actually what is ghoulish.

  10. No one here is portraying this as an easy fix. People are simply trying to understand the factors at play in a tragedy that happened in our town. You’re the ghoul here, Sac. You seem to get off on calling other people insensitive or cruel or ghoulish for just asking what happened. Transparent is right.

  11. SBTOWNIE – You really aren’t reading very closely are you? I never called out LUVADUCK for being ghoulish, I responded with that term in reference to your complaints about other threads, where yes, you were being insensitive and petulant. I called out Luvaduck for, consistent with her other comments, making it seem like the reaction to this tragedy should differ based on what the cause was. If I was wrong, then sorry, Luvaduck. As for saying people on this thread said it’s an “easy fix,” again, never said that. I mean people on this site in general whenever homelessness comes up. See comments by Rupert, et al. See comments saying just to “move them” out of town. See comments saying to burn or destroy their belongings. Etc etc…..
Not sure why you are here picking fights.

  12. “Clearly you are in the minority here. Most people want to know more information about what happened so they can shape their world view, votes, etc. in accordance with reality no matter how grim the truth is.” Check the number of downvotes on your past comments demanding for information about the police officer who past away. Minority? Nope.

  13. Get over it Sac. I was going off info provided by another commenter that I said I did not realize was outdated. Commenter said multiple deaths and unexplained illnesses. Which was true. But the info was out of date and the link provided I think was 5 yers old so the officer in question was (probably) not affected by whatever was going on back 5 years ago which was affecting the police force heavily. You are arguing with and insulting every single person on this thread who dares to ponder the circumstances and insinuating we are all disrespecting the dead. I think we would all agree we want to prevent these tragedies. It’s like it’s your MO in life to go on stories like these and respond to every commenter who dares ask for or wonder aloud about more information as if every single one of us is somehow guilty of dishonoring the dead and disrespecting their families. On the contrary, to disrespect these dead and their families is to not ask questions, to not ask what happened, to not try to figure it out so we can perhaps shape what we want to do with votes and policy in order to try to reduce these tragedies. You are definitely in the minority here.
