Parks Dept Warns of Unstable Cliffs at Shoreline Park

By the Santa Barbara City Parks & Recreation
UNSTABLE! The recent storm has caused instability along some of our bluffs, and a large crack has been discovered on the cliffs of Shoreline Park above Leadbetter Beach.
Signs are posted. Please use extreme caution near and below cliffs as the ground could give way.

Jan 14, 2023 06:51 PMConsidering it is already about to fall it would be great if there was a way to help it along so that it is over and done with. Being proactive about this instead of just reactive would be GREAT.

Jan 14, 2023 08:33 PMSBSAND - what would you suggest?

Jan 15, 2023 07:45 AMDynamite was used to clear for roads & railroads and 'cannons' for unstable snow in ski areas, but that would put the mansions on the other side of the road on a deteriorating cliff like Del Playa in I.V. so I don't think that would go over big. <G>

Jan 15, 2023 07:57 AMI'm not an engineer so will leave suggestions to the experts, who I am sure looking at options as to how to proceed. I worry about people who do NOT read the news that are walking along the beach below in the coming days/weeks, and could find themselves crushed underneath the cliff. With the tides we have I can't imagine it would be easy to put up signage or successfully close beach access.

Jan 14, 2023 10:01 PMMy Great-grandpapa Ishmael was a prospector round these here parts. He reckoned that throwing down loose bits of hill would change things for the better in the short term, but take luck away from the longer chase for the mother lode. She’s down there, everybody knows but they lack the gumption to give it a whack.

Jan 15, 2023 10:32 AMCHILLINGRILLN - Your Great-grandpappy knew thar was gold up on that hill. Maybe we both can partner up and take it a whack at it to find it and split it 50/50. Unless we try to cheat each other when we do find it, and one of us git's buried with with our boots on up on thar hill.

Jan 15, 2023 05:55 AMDisaster waiting to happen. That portion of brace should be closed off until something is done about the falling hill. What’s predictable is preventable.

Jan 15, 2023 08:32 AMAlso the cliff edge at Douglas Family Preserve/dog park, where dogs occasionally go off and have to be rescued has, since the storm, some new wrinkly sloping runoff patterns that appear to weaken the edge.
