By a Parent from Notre Dame School

I am a worried parent with kids at Notre Dame School. On 3/26 when the kids were going to school we noticed the school was vandalized. After parents posted on Facebook and other websites, it was bought to the parent's attention that there were also threating flyers out there with Notre Dame written on them.

On 3/26 at 11:40 PM the principal sent out an email to parents letting them know school would be cancelled the next day due to new info. The email had no real details so that had the parents worried.
3/27 at 8:31 PM a new email was sent to the parents saying that they are aware of a flyer and both cases are being investigated but they have decided to cancel school till Monday.

3/28 at 12:40 an email was sent out to parents saying there would be a parent meeting and the Santa Barbara Police Department would be there to provide updates and answer questions.

At this meeting there was a Lieutenant from SBPD and he let us parents know that he was 100% sure that the police department knew who was making these flyers but they meant no harm from them and that just to be safe they would have 3 police officers at/around the school for morning drop-offs, lunch and dismissal for the next month. The Lieutenant also let us know that since no laws had been broken they could not arrest the person behind these flyers, but the person was told they are NOT allowed to be at the school or the church that is part of the school and if they did they would be arrested and charged with trespassing. Less than 12 hrs after this meeting, this man was arrested at the church.

3/29 at 11 AM KEYT reported this man went to the church that is part of the school and was detained. We parents did not hear anything from the school till 4:46 PM on 3/29 and the only update we received was this man was put on a mental hold and they would give us more updates as it’s released to them. We have heard nothing since.

This man has put our kids at risk and has continued to post threating messages on Facebook. He is trolling the police department and they have done nothing about him. The parents of the school have been worried about this daily and the school has not been sending updates or been helpful. The police department lied when they told us they would be at the school.  What should we parents do to make sure our kids are safe at school?

This guy has also posted on facebook a story on how he was on a mental health hold for over a week and doesn't understand why. Please do research and look up his page and see just how dangerous he is. How is this guy walking the streets ? He is talking about getting a lawyer to sue I believe the police department, which is a bunch of crap. This guy needs to be locked away for a long time.

The fact that this guy now is following this thread says alot - he is obsessed, and doesn't think he is doing anything wrong. That is problematic thinking and very concerning. Almost a touch of narcissism there - not realizing or wanting to realize he is the common denominator instead pointing the finger at everyone else. This is a very unstable and possibly dangerous human being and I truly hope nothing happens.

After looking at this persons facebook page you can see he is mentally unstable. Anyone who has a child or just has an extra 3 mins please call the school and ask for the principal to ask for an update on the children's safety at (805) 965-1033 after that please call the non emergency number for the police department in Santa Barbara at (805) 897-2300 asking for more patrol around the school. You can never be too safe especially with the mentally ill. Even if you do not have kids at this school or kids at all please call anyways so we can make sure our voices are heard for these kids.

I wonder how much it costs for a year at Notre Dame. I went through Mt. Carmel School and I know it wasn't expensive in those days because my Mom and Grandma couldn't have afforded it if it was. Same for Santa Barbara Catholic High (now Bishop). Our high school was where Notre Dame is now.

He has 4 followers and they are probably all cops, he has this post on his Facebook page and he is probably commenting here. I just wonder why someone would terrorize children?

I think this guy is getting a kick out of scared parents its like he is a internet star. It takes a special type of person to make threats towards kids and after post about the stories of worried parents. This guy needs help

The school and the Police department need to make sure the kids and staff are safe. Hopefully this post will bring change for the school and more communication will be given to the parents and make the police do their jobs protecting all kids. They should be around the school checking to make sure its safe

This person put many signs around Milpas and downtown. Most were about hurting kids and believing all kids should die. Some of the posters had a child's picture with Notre Dame written on the kids face.

There was acknowledged danger. The school closed. The school was vandalized. Threats were made. The perp showed up at the church and was arrested. Parents are being mistreated.

Don't down play a threat please, this individual obviously has some serious issues and quite frankly you can make no guarantees what he is or isn't capable of! Very disappointed in the way this entire situation has been handled!! The TargetedSB gives the individuals name however it appears to be kept very hush hush in the media!! The parents were never made aware of the poster that was posted all over Milpas street that had Notre Dame on the poster, the parents have a right to know all the facts and to determine if they think it is a safe for their children to attend or not attend, the individuals in charge here should of and still should step up to the plate!!

What a time we live in, when one has to worry about your children being shot at or otherwise harmed at school. In my day all we had to worry about was rampant bullying and kids fighting each other.

Make a tinfoil structure and put it on his lawn. Then put a note in his mailbox saying the mother ship is watching him. That will keep him busy for a few years.

So, it sounds like this guy is a paranoid schizophrenic or something of that nature. Firstly, try to remind yourself that the vast, vast majority of schizophrenic patients are NOT violent, even the ones that have wild ideas. The police have their hands tied, if the person truly did not have motive in making these purported threats (i.e. this person did not see them as threats and the police believe it is very plausible that they were not meant to be threats), then all they can do is a mental hold (which they did). Things you can do: Document, document, document, just in case things get worse (unlikely). When you see unsettling facebook posts from this person, you can contact the police department or the case's assigned detective and request a welfare check (again, document your requests). Maybe he will get the help he needs during one of these mental holds. Request that the school employ a security guard during school hours after the police are no longer guarding the property. Talk to your children in an age-appropriate manner about strangers, mental health, and self preservation.

Document everything if something happens you need to sue. Last I checked, threats, destroying property, loitering and harassment are crimes. What a bunch of BS. Post this guy or girl's name for all to see (not the poster, the person engaging in the threatening and illegal behavior).

You have only one choice, and that is to put your children in another school like Laguna Blanca. More expensive, but what is your child's safety worth?

That cost includes food, living expenses either on or off campus, etc. Meaning, costs of living that would be incurred quite literally living anywhere, not necessarily associated with school. My point there was that this is *not* an expensive school, not that it really has anything to do with supposed safety (an agreement with you), and the shooting really had nothing to do with the school itself, but rather a perfect storm being in a location inhabited by many students of *both* colleges in the Santa Barbara area, as well as many other types of people and families. There were also 14 other people injured by him, who included people not from UCSB. why are you so rude and defensive?

If you go to the cost of attendance page of the UCSB website the total cost for an in-state student is 40,000. My point was that money doesn’t buy safety but obviously that was to hard for you to understand. Ps. The students that were shot and killed by idiot Rogers WERE UCSB students. Their parents paid mega bucks for their children to be “safe” and they are dead now. So what was your point again?

UCSB only costs $40,000 per year for out of state students. It is closer to $13,000 for in state students. The shooting was also (1) not on the UCSB campus and (2) not committed by a UCSB student

UCSB cost 40,000 a year and they’re the only school in town that has had a mass shooting and several students run over by a psycho. So like yea, totally, the more you spend on education the safer you are. Not.

Or any one of the fantastic local public schools or charter schools. Expensive private schools aren't necessarily immune from threats, as can be seen with this very article.
