Owl Rescued by CHP Recovering at SB Wildlife Care Network

On July 16 at 8:00 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers Sims and Mann responded to a 9-1-1 call about an injured barn owl in the center divide around Turnpike.

The CHP officers briefly stopped traffic to rescue the owl. They called the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network and brought the owl to their Wildlife Care Center on Fairview Avenue immediately.

The owl was given an intake exam. Veterinary technicians discovered the owl had a fractured humerus and some bruising. The owl was almost certainly hit by a car.

The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network’s Wildlife Veterinarian, Dr. Avery Berkowitz, performed emergency surgery on the owl’s humerus. The surgery was a success.

The owl (patient #3098 of this year) is now healing at the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network. The bird enjoys four meals of mice and rats per day.
