Kim Stroud, Founder and Executive Director of the Ojai Raptor Center, releases a seven-month old Great Horned Owl at the Douglas Family Preserve on September 29, 2023.
The owl fell out of its nest when it was less than a month old and brought to the Ojai Raptor Center. It was raised in a special large flight cage where it learned survival skills.
Watch this video of its release at the preserve and very first taste of total freedom in an environment with an abundance of food: gophers.
The Ojai Raptor Center is holding its Fall Festival Sunday, November 12 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Join their celebration and learn about migration, conservation, and local birds.
The event includes games, food trucks, activities, music, an auction, entertainment, and stage presentations. Visit OjaiRaptorCenter.org

So beautiful, freedom…..
They do great work, thanks for sharing.
Gophers are pretty large for a young owl, but the preserve probably has lots of mice, a favorite food.
