Op-Ed: Santa Barbara City Abandons Businesses Again

By Bob Ficarra of Metro Entertainment

I wanted to make everyone aware of the joke of the Santa Barbara City permitting process that had a huge negative impact on an entire block of businesses.

The entire 0 West block of Anapamu Street had “No Parking, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm” signs covering the entire block for weeks, but with no work dates.

It is mandatory to have work dates posted and work actually done during the posted times. After weeks of no work and no available street parking, I called to inquire. Finally the job was started 2 days later and COMPLETED WITHIN A FEW HOURS!

Why was this not followed up and checked on? How did zero city staff notice this for weeks? Why, again, do small businesses suffer from the incompetence and negligence of others with no consequences?

Weeks of an entire block parking shut down for three total hours of work. These signs cost businesses thousands of dollars in lost revenue and many unnecessary unhappy customers.

  1. What I’ve learned here is that if no work dates are posted, one should call right away. Seems to me if there are supposed to be dates posted, and there aren’t, then parking is still permitted. But of course no one is going to risk getting a ticket. That city department needs to get its act together.

  2. Santa Barbara City is mismanaged. Council needs to hold their/our new out-of-town City Manager accountable. Apparently she needs to micro-manage public work supervisor (plus parks & rec) or fire/demote/ reassign both of them.

  3. The City of Santa Barbara is now having some of the same problems as bigger cities. We have a city government that is unable to deliver needed city services in a professional and timely manner. All you have to do is look at the condition of many of our city streets. Some neighborhoods have gone without street sweeping for over 40 years. The council spends too much time and money on issues that have nothing to do with the basic duty of city government to make our city function properly. Now the council wants to raise the sales tax and dump this new tax money into the general fund to be used as they see fit. If the new tax is approved, it should be earmarked for improvement of our city’s infrastructure and not a dime for some feel good misguided projects that council after council has wasted millions op to the detriment of our once well run and beautiful city. Vote NO on the new sales tax until you know where this money will be spent.

  4. Damn Bob,

This would never have happened if, like back in the day, you had The Rock signing autographs on the block. Hell Chyna would have backed the city down in her prime.
We need to revisit our approach here, let’s get Jesse Ventura on the case. He’s “just a guy asking questions”. I would suggest Hulk Hogan but after his appearance at the RNC he might be over exposed.

Keep telling truth to power Bob.
