One Injury in UTV Collision Off Paradise Road

By edhat staff

One person was helicoptered to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital following a UTV collision in the Los Padres National Forest Saturday evening.

At 6:30 p.m., Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle accident off Buckhorn Road. Upon arrival, crews learned the vehicle was a side-by-side utility terrain vehicle (UTV) and it had crashed approximately 100 feet over the side of the roadway, 7 miles from the Upper Oso campground.

Crews learned the male driver sustained injuries in the fall while the male passenger escaped the vehicle before it left the roadway.

Firefighters and Search & Rescue crews were having a difficult time gaining access to the patient due to the location and road conditions. SBC Helicopter 308 was able to locate the victim but was unable to hoist safely. Search & Rescue performed technical rescue using a rope system to bring the patient to the roadway.  Helicopter 308 landed nearby and the patient, who sustained several injuries including broken ribs and a head injury, was flown to Cottage Hospital.
