Multiple dogs (15+) in the Storke Ranch neighborhood have become ill after Kitson distributed mulch from the county supply.

Dogs walking along newly mulch-lined sidewalks are experiencing extreme vomiting and loss of motor functions.

Are others experiencing similar issues with animals subjected to Santa Barbara County mulch?

Also shocking that so many dogs were affected at Kitson and the County have been SILENT on the topic.

If it was THC, it would have had to have been ingested in some way. Were the dogs eating the mulch? My dog eats a lot of weird stuff, but I've never seen him chewing on wood chips. Just walking on cannabis won't cause intoxication. It's not like liquid LSD or something......

Wow, toxic mulch? Now I've heard almost everything. I thought the worst thing about the County mulch was the smell.

How about testing the dogs to identify toxin, then check possible sources against those results. Years ago some of my dogs ate cannabis and all that happened was they slept for days

It seems like the vets caring for these dogs and their owners should band together to get to the bottom of it and make sure this is major local news. If this is correct, others need to know as well and it should be covered by local reporters and a large article.

I've gotten mulch from the county many times, and it always has lots of plastic garbage in it. Golf balls, cigarette lighters, etc. I won't be getting it from them anymore.

TMO--whom do you think put this trash into the mulch? It wasn't the county but the people who don't care what they discard or where they discard it. "We have met the enemy and it is us!" (Pogo for those of you who remember that far back.)

I broke out in hives within 2 hours of getting mulch. I’m very sensitive to chemicals. I am guessing roundup which as much as we would like to think is safe and that’s it’s ok to use IT IS NOT. I’m sure if you test the mulch we would find round up. Poor dogs.

Several dogs I fostered have died quickly from severe aggressive lymphoma and I was also wondering if it was related to the use of Roundup.

Dear EdHat readers,
The safety of all animals is essential to us, and we especially care about our pets and yours. When we learned that a dog in the Storke Ranch area possibly became sick on April 17 from mulch placed in the area the previous day, we spoke with Kitson and MarBorg, and the mulch was immediately replaced. This particular location uses mulch from the County, from MarBorg, or a mix of both sources. The mulch receives periodic testing, and we are working with MarBorg to determine if there was a problem with the mulch, what that problem might be, and how we can address it.

If your pet becomes sick, call your vet. It is also important to remember that because our green waste is ground into mulch, there are many items that should NOT be placed in your green bin, including food, poison oak, and cannabis. To learn more about what should and shouldn’t go in your green bin, visit If you have more information about this incident or any questions, please contact me at (805)568-3425 or email

Thank you,

There must be something to this story if the County PIO is responding on edhat. A woman on Facebook had it tested and said it was THC, whether that's true or not who knows. But it's clear that several animals got sick by an unknown toxin or else the county wouldn't have removed the mulch.
