Three separate collisions involving multiple vehicles snarled traffic on Highway 101 late Tuesday afternoon in Goleta, sending nine people to local hospitals, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Fire officials said the incidents were reported at approximately 5:23 p.m. on April 7:
- A five-vehicle collision on southbound 101 between the Fairview Avenue and Patterson Avenue interchanges
- A two-vehicle collision on northbound 101 at the same location
- A four-vehicle collision on northbound 101 between the Patterson Avenue and Turnpike Road interchanges
Nine patients were transported by ground ambulance, with minor to moderate injuries. Seven of those patients were from the first two incidents; two were from the third.
Southbound Highway 101 was reduced to one lane as crews worked the scene.
The fire department shared photos from the first crash and urged motorists to drive with caution.
The cause of the collisions was not immediately available.
