It’s not surprising that congregate care facilities still have high numbers, as people there live in close proximity, and are likely already in less-than-robust health. I certainly hope that the situation will improve radically once all such residents are vaccinated. Very sad to be losing so many people.

I had blood work done about 20 years ago... said I was border-line anemic. Knew that. Article came out today that 2/3 of all hospitalized had one or multiple health issues, diabetes, lung, heart, even liver issues. I know there have been many studies that show that those that end up with the worst symptoms, including death, have a severe deficiency of vitamin D3, which is related to sun exposure.... hmmm. Nursing homes, care facilities and access to outdoor sunlight.... might be a correlation.

Yes, it can take a long time to die. Depends on a bunch of factors. My friends brother hung on for months, then ultimately died. My friend's niece, who was only 26 years old and healthy, died in a couple weeks. A friend's mother on the East Coast who is elderly was touch and go for an amazingly long amount of time and actually survived but it remains to be seen if she can live long through the damage. A friend of a friend had a double lung transplant. She ended up in the hospital with it but actually was not intubated. There are way more people like her than many people are aware of. Another guy's family did a GoFundMe for the same reason...in his 40's, was in the hospital for a while but not intubated. Lung damage was so extensive that they told him he would die in months if he didn't get a lung transplant.

Yes, I wondered the same. On tonight's news several reports of national congregate facility death rates dipping due to vaccinations. Is this a long lag (ie; vaccinations started 6 weeks ago, but these folks were already ill) or due to vaccinations not being available locally for these facilities?

No underlying health conditions that they were aware of. Too many people go though much of their lives without regular physical exams and bloodwork. Things like diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol go undiagnosed for years and even decades for some people. One of the "no pre-existing" deaths was in a at a congregate care facility and you'd think that residents of such a facility would receive regular check-ups, but who knows.

What's really terrible is that 6 of 9 deaths were still from congregate care facilities. For a year we've heard our public health officials and politicians talking about our most vulnerable, yet these helpless people are still dying at an alarming rate. It's beyond ridiculous at this point.
