The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department reports nine additional deaths and 418 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday.

Eight of the nine individuals were over 70 years of age, one was between 50-69 years of age. Six had underlying health issues and five were associated with an outbreak at a congregate facility.

There have now been 223 confirmed COVID-19 related deaths in Santa Barbara County since the virus arrived last March.

There are currently 3,027 active cases within the county including 197 hospitalizations with 53 in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Why are there still outbreaks occurring at congregate living facilities? They know these individuals are the most vulnerable, and they've known this for nearly a whole year. This is outrageous.

my mother lives in a nursing home in santa barbara. The positive cases have gone up over 400% in one month. That is insane.
They got the vaccinations last week but not soon enough for most of the residents. My mom is dying and I can't even hold her hand.

It really is outrageous. While they disallow residents (who pay an insane amount of money, by the way) from seeing their families, the employees go home, go out, and carelessly bring the virus back with them. There really needs to be a different way. Class action lawsuits? I truly do not understand how they can forbid families from seeing their loved ones in their last years.

A big part of the delay in getting vaccinations in congregate care facilities is that it was put in the hands of private enterprise, rather than health departments. In California, CVS Health and Walgreens are partnering with the federal government to administer the shots.

West Virginia is the first state to finish the first round of vaccinations in all of its 214 nursing homes. Why? West Virginia has ignored the federal bureaucracy and is instead using private enterprise in the form of local pharmacies.

People die from increased meaningless of their lives in later days and NO real stimulation from loved ones--We have so many virtual and healthful ways to protect older people with extreme vulnerability--we are not being reasonable or creative. They are dying no matter what we do?
Deprivation of outside air, while distancing, disinfecting (all possible) and not being able to share love or joyful moments is a virus that kills even more quickly. Let's have respectful life- hospice care now.

There are many other states that are vaccinating 75 and older and they have several options to go to get them including pharmacies. Just like they do to get the flu shot. What is wrong with this state? The 75+ crowd in this state are being told maybe later February or March. This is ridiculous.

My local provider expects to finish 80 +yrs old and start 75+ next Thursday Jan 21st. About 12,000 in that group , then next is nearly 28,000 patients who are age 65 and above. Will be interesting...

Sandy, are you in north county? The only over 80s I know who have been able to get appointments are going to get them in Lompoc. SB is still claiming we're stuck on health care workers only.

Sansum clinic just sent out a message saying that they anticipate that vaccine demand will outpace their supply, but they are working on it. They are going by age, so even if the state says 65-year-olds are eligible, if Sansum has only enough doses for people over 80, the 65-year-olds will still have to wait a bit.

Buena Vista is the nursing home my mother is dying in. They have more co vid positive cases and deaths then anywhere in the county. They had 17 patients last month testing positive and as of today they have 84 patients and 85 staff testing positive.
When i can get someone to answer the phone they tell me my mother is so agitated and miserable they can't take her vital signs. I ( tearfully)begged Buena Vista her Dr. and the nurse practitioner to give her something like Ativan to calm her down. The only thing the Dr. ordered is a Psych evaluation that wont occur till next week. My mother may be dead by then. They have been negligent, irresponsible, and should not be allowed to stay open.

That's because the responsibility for vaccinations in congregate facilities in SB County is CVS Healthcare, not the Public Health Department.
