Two people suffered major injuries and were airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital after a head-on vehicle collision on SR-154 Tuesday evening.

Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to the scene at SR-154 and Armor Ranch Road in Santa Ynez Valley at 5:34 p.m. with an ambulance, California Highway Patrol (CHP), a CALstar helicopter, and a helicopter from Santa Barbara County Air Support in Santa Ynez.

One driver struck a deer crossing the roadway and swerved into the path of another oncoming vehicle where they collided head-on, said Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni.

There was one person in each vehicle, both males estimated to be in their 30’s or early 40’s. Major extrication was involved for both victims, which took firefighters quite a while to complete. Both drivers complained of major injuries and were transported by separate helicopters to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, said Zaniboni.

CHP is the agency investigating the cause of the accident.
