Tourists and Dining During COVID?

By an edhat reader

I’m curious what other readers think. Downtown State Street still has tables and chairs out where people are gathering (maskless) and/or eating takeout from local establishments. Nearly every day there are photos of celebrities visiting Santa Barbara, mostly staying at the new Miramar Resort, which I can only assume a lot of over tourists are also visiting the area.

These are against state and local guidelines. We’re in a pandemic and a recent report stated Santa Barbara County’s rate of infection is higher than any other county in California. Does anyone else feel the tables/chairs should be removed and hotels should be stricter about people who are clearly not traveling for essential business?

  1. New evidence is coming to light that closing restaurants and small businesses may have created the surge in California bc many ppl still gathered but in private uncontrollable home settings. Agree or disagree it’s definitely something to investigate. Agree however tourism should not be happening. But I wonder if the ppl had jobs they had to do they’d have a lot less time to travel and hang out with friends to continuously spreading the virus.

  2. Thanks guys for keeping my kids out of the classroom and my business shutdown! Even outside, WEAR A MASK if you can’t be 6 feet or more apart. Standing around like that talking will easily spread any virus when you’re that close. If you don’t like with a person, STAY AWAY from them. How goddamn hard is it for people to do the little things to slow the spread???

  3. Then it gets back to your erroneous thinking that forcing people to isolate for 10+ months is actually an option. Let’s just mandate world peace, ok. Everyone listen, we’re just not going to make war anymore, we’re going to disband our militaries and all live in peace love and harmony. Simple really, we’ll just do that…

  4. not masks Sbtownie, the arbitrary closing of businesses. If a business can operate safely, they can’t be forced to close just because governor wants to force a different behavior (people gathering). Especially when so many other businesses like big box stores are allowed open with everyone crammed in. At the same time the government is forcing businesses to close, they’re demanding they still pay their property taxes, licensing, fees, permits, etc…. it’s criminal and not supported by any law.

  5. I know you don’t register facts you don’t like, but all you have to do is read about the various vaccines to know that they may keep you from having severe symptoms, but there is as yet no evidence that they keep you from asymptomatic infections and spreading the virus. That’s why the guidance is to continue mask wearing. But, you’ll persist with the Big Lie.

  6. That’s refreshing to read SBSBSB. I’ve always appreciated our strong and close nit community here, especially during the (what seems like) regular disasters we’ve had here over the past decade. While it’s very important that we support each other through yet another one, I’m not sure where things were flipped upside down for people to get this idea that everyone else is responsible for your safety vs. you being responsible for your own safety. Stay home, stay safe, be responsible, venture out into this dangerous world only if you choose.
