Seven people sustained injuries when a tree fell on Highway 101 near El Capitan Wednesday morning.

At 5:10 a.m., California Highway Patrol and Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to the southbound lanes, just south of El Capitan Ranch Road.

Four vehicles crashed into the fallen tree with a total of seven patients sustaining injuries. Four of those patients were in the primary vehicle that had a tree fall on it and were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by ground ambulances with minor to moderate injuries.

Traffic lanes were closed for approximately half an hour and reopened after the tree was cut and removed from lanes.

“Please Drive Vigilant: SBC Fire responded to multiple vehicle accidents on HWY 101 between Gaviota and Los Alamos during night. The new year is in reach, let’s make it there by driving at safe speeds and staying focused,” said County Fire Captain Scott Safechuck.
