Scanner Reports 7-31-20

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Seems like no one really gives a shit about anything nowadays. Oh they care about their own interests and personal life and loved ones but as far as other people and everything else not so much. With things the way they are today, it is hard to care about anything or anyone. Many have become lax in their beliefs of right and wrong and that might be why things are slowly changing for the worse, my opinion anyway. I was speaking with a group of friends a few weeks ago and they were talking about owning guns and how every household should have them for protection. “If you don’t have a gun now you are too late,” one fella said. “Too late for what?” I  asked. I cannot remember the answer off hand but it was like what is going on in our country. I thought about my Bible and no matter what the trouble if I had one around I was safe. I’m not a preacher but every time I have been in a rough spot and asked for help, I have always received help, maybe not exactly what I asked for but there was always comfort and an answer I have always relayed on God as a last house on the left, in a Foxhole Christian sort of way. As long as I lead a good life not breaking the law I never really thought I’d ever need a gun but others might. Though guns can be deadly and dangerous as hell in the wrong hands they are tools and if I lived in the middle of nowhere off-grid it would be a necessity for me to own a gun, or if I lived in cities or towns where there is a lot of crime then for sure I would own a gun. If the shit was really starting to hit the fan here I’d buy a gun and a rifle but I have never felt that threatened here and I hope I never do. I have lived in cities and towns that have a lot of crime and I have been a victim of violent crime. I never want to be in that position again without a gun. If I ever find it necessary to own a gun I won’t just buy it and put it under my pillow, or in a dresser, I will take a gun safety class run by a current or retired cop. Maybe things are going to get hairy. I don’t know right now I feel safe with the Lord.

You ever notice you start talking about God to people, they run away? I actually tested it a few times, once in particular before I went straight. A group of associated thugs stored some stolen goods in my apartment and they would not remove it, I dumped all of it in the Calumet River. Boy were they pissed. They were looking all over town for me so were the police. I thought I’d be smart and go into the rescue mission no one would ever find me there. Of course, the police were the first to know because the rescue mission always called the police to make sure the person they were taking in was not wanted. The cops said “Will at least we know where he is at.” I wasn’t wanted I was just a BIG PAIN IN THE ASS! But the thugs wanted to do me in for dumping what they ripped off. One day while delivering food baskets to the poor I ran into them, they were in a car they were armed they pulled over and pulled their guns on me. “The cash or the stash,” one said. “Neither,” I answered, “Have you heard the word of the Lord today?” I pulled my bible out, opened it up and read. “If God be for us who can be against us?” They looked at me shocked and drove off like scared rabbits. I never saw them again, there was a preacher nearby and he damn near fainted. Like I said I’m not a Christian or bible thumper though I have a feeling that when my time comes I’m going to scrub shitters for a hundred thousand years before they let me in anywhere…HERE IS THY BLESSED SCANNER RONI REPORTS.

One time when I was homeless here me and others had a cooking fire next to the tracks between Bath and Castillo streets back in 1980. We got drunk and made a huge pot of Hobo Stew. We used a 5 gallon oil can from Rudys across the street. We got veggies from Tri-Counties Produce dumpster, the Gals panhandled to buy beef. I supplied all of the booze having worked all day: Jack Daniels, beer and cigarettes. We ate it al,l drunk it all passed out, the fire still going. I woke up with a firefighter spraying my burning shoes which were on my feet in the campfire. When it was out they warned us not to light anymore campfires in the brush side of the tracks, road, anywhere just in the BBQ grills in the parks. We all listened, if I wanted to cook a steak I did so at Leadbetter on a BBQ Grill but mostly I ate at Queenies, Louies, Sambo’s, or Carrow’s, or bought fully cooked chickens at Aurello’s they were 3.50 then .As long as I am old I will always remember The Good old Days. Back then for the most part people listened to responders when they told us something and Folks pulled over for them more. In the Old Days too when they heard a siren not that many people seem to care anymore about anything or anyone.
