The Santa Barbara Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance to identify and locate a suspect and his associate involved in a battery that caused injury to a Santa Barbara man.

The attack occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. Saturday, October 31, 2020, in the roadway of the 1100 block of E. Cabrillo Boulevard adjacent to the East Beach Volleyball Courts.

The victim and suspect did not know each other prior to the incident. The suspect was a beach goer that had been harassing numerous citizens on the beach and passing motorists before he attacked the victim after taking the victim’s hat and American flag that was affixed to his car.  The suspect fled east towards Butterfly Beach.

Santa Barbara Police officers, Harbor Patrol, and several citizens searched the area for the suspect, but he was not located.

The suspect is described as a white male adult in his thirties, approximately 6’ tall with a thin to medium build, short brown hair, green or blue eyes, with tattoos down both arms. The suspect was wearing dark colored swim shorts with no shirt, and no shoes. The suspect was accompanied by a white female adult, 25-30 years, with blonde hair, wearing the pink and blue bathing suit in the photographs attached to this bulletin.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Santa Barbara Police Department at 805-897-2346.

  1. Lots of Trump supporters were driving along Cabrillo Blvd at the time of the assault, honking horns and displaying massive Trump banners. Not sure if they were connected with the assault, but they were definitely inciting violence. I didn’t see any police escort or presence despite this caravan of several dozen cars and pickup trucks. If it had been a BLM protest, you can bet there would have been dozens of cops out in full riot gear.

  2. Watching the video, it seems to me that the Trump supporter lunged at the counter-protester in an aggressive manner. The “suspect” who shoved the Trump supporter looked like he was acting in self -defense. I do not think the SBPD should be wasting their time looking for this individual. These unauthorized Trump caravans are happening all over the country and they are inciting violence with their hateful rhetoric. It takes a lot of courage for one young man and his female companion to stand up to a caravan of these thugs. They have my respect.

  3. Looks like a setup – police car ready to zoom in to support the dumpy trump guy that jumps up into face of up the big guy who did nothing but defend himself, i.e. push back. Dumpy guy falls on his ass and his buddy is ready with cell phone to document a crime? Huh? Just let it go. Go out and vote and let’s hope we dont ever see this kind of bs here again.

  4. This guy ran from the shoulder from behind parked cars yelling and hit my car as we drove by.
Is he mentally stable or just have that much hatred?
Why do people have to act violently try to those expressing their first amendment rights?
And others were throwing rocks at cars driving by.
Seriously, how old are these people. Do they think they’re making their “cause” look good?
I tell you it moves me further away from their side.
We are all a community with different opinions, but when you speak to each other one on one you’ll find that we all have common goals.
The media distorts and twists. Talk to your neighbors learn about them and why they have their opinions. Both of you might learn something.

  5. That is all right I assumed that he wasn’t guilty and the Trump Supports were in the wrong based on past performances. After seeing this video I discovered I was wrong I have to make my wrong right for me if I’m hated so what…Before the call went out on this assault the police were responding to other things the same guy was doing. It was not a set up.

  6. What are you talking about LOOSECANNON???!! We can wildly dislike Trump and hope he loses… but when you start telling people to not believe their eyes it’s embarrassing… and it’s dangerous. The guy who grabbed the hat and pushed the guy Was obviously in the wrong. It’s literally on video from multiple angles. That was the “violence”. It’s ok to admit the bigger idiot in this certain circumstance wasn’t the Trump supporter. To say otherwise You lose all credibility and your “respect” is worthless…
Facts and science and the truth matter… stop the assault on that from both sides… it’s like the nutty fat left is doing everything they can to catch up and match the nuttiness on the far right!!!

  7. 1st of all what a disrespectful spoiled brat! What right does he have to remove the mans hat, he was inside his vehicle and regardless it’s his right to support whoever or whatever he wants! We all have that right poor excuse of a Young person the future of our society and nation. I would have smacked him for striking someone older regardless of politics. I vote and support whoever I want but I don’t have the right to remove someones hat or anything! Cowboys respect a persons hat plain and simple! What a COWARD for running! Does that mean he’ll push me off my horse if he’s a PETA Supporter and he thinks it’s cruelty to animals.

  8. I hope District Attorney, Police Chief, Mayor, City Council as well as the victim are paying attention as well as SBPD this is video evidence of abuse possibly elder abuse, assault, robbery, evading police officer, disrespecting our flag etc etc we had to stop these things from occurring. I hope the gentleman presses charges and most importantly he’s. OK and also I don’t know if he was caught that bikini clad Young lady will know who he is and doesn’t protect him then she’s. Aiding and abetting. Yes I am upset over this incident.

  9. I think we need some context here. In the Trump era, the hardcore right wing has deliberately targeted liberal areas with the express purpose of inflaming unrest. There have been many instances where their detractors on the left, sometimes BLM supporters, sometimes not, have been run over and killed by Trump supporters using their vehicles with homicidal intent. Just yesterday, a bunch of thugs in Texas rammed a Biden-Harris bus and attempted to force it off the road. A campaign event had to be cancelled. The Trump caravans, make no misrake about it, are being weaponized to intimidate, bully and threaten communities who don’t support their exteme political ideology. The slob who jumped out of his car and menaced the young protester was not an innocent party. The young guy acted out of self defense.

  10. So just so it’s clear it was OK for the Young man to have reached into the gentleman’s vehicle and removed his hat? Would you have been OK with someone removing any type of personal item from your person (politics aside just in general) and then you approaching the individual to get your personal item back and be pushed down you would be OK with that…. Not me politucs aside this was NOT OK and I take the gentleman’s side for wanting his personal belonging back and for confronting the BULLY again politics aside no one has the right without consent to remove anyones item from their person.

  11. I’m amazed and disgusted that the anti-Trumpsters are taking on the very personna of the Cheetoh In Chief. Good god, people, you’re playing right into their tiny hands! Stop the screaming, yelling and confrontations, all of which solve nothing. There are only two ways of dealing with the overly loud and flaming deplorables: (1) completely ignore them and let them run amok and make idiots of themselves; or (2) simply laugh at them. Trust me—they HATE being laughed at. They’re the original playground bullies, and being publicly laughed at drives them crazy.

  12. So if Dodger fans do the same as these Trump supporters for winning the World Series it gives a Giants fan the right to remove the Dodger hat off that fans hat while in their vehicle and it wouldn’t be OK for the Dodger fan to confront the individual to get his hat back just b/c Giants fans don’t like Dodger fans. I don’t see this Young man as courageous, he’s a COWARD someone with courage wouldn’t have runaway. Driving down a street is not being a thug.

  13. Great advice, Rex. So how did that go down in 1933? Haha, look at those funny Nazis in their outfits goosestepping down the streets. What a silly spectactle they are making of themselves. Let’s huddle around and have a jolly good laugh at their expense.

  14. If it would have been Biden or Kanye West supporters would it have been acceptable? Last I checked we ALL can vote for whoever we want or NOT vote at all heck we can write in whoever we want t was still WRONG deplorable behavior. I thought anti Trump supporters were peaceful law abiding citizens who cause no harm and don’t incite violence and are for peace and love. What happened?

  15. Loose come on, we’ve all seen the video, the white suv was half way in the trucks lane trying to run him off the road to stop him from following the van and the truck driver was not having it. In regards to the story here, it is never ok to attack anyone for who they support even if you don’t like it. I hope they catch this thug.

  16. LCP, we have equality for all races? So how do you explain the wide disparities in income, wealth, medical outcomes, longevity, education, segregation in housing and almost any other factor you can think of between US citizens who are caucasian and those who are not? You are probably trying to say that there is equality of opportunity in the US but even that is clearly not true and never has been.

  17. I parked near the East Beach VB courts to go for walk south toward Butterfly beach. As I walked past the courts to watch the people playing I heard a guy say how great Covid has been since he is getting checks from the government and does not have to work. One of the other guys he was playing with said “me too” – “ho much are you getting?”. These are able body young people probably in their late 20’s. What struck me as odd is that they were saying this loudly – they could care less that I heard what they were saying – as if it was just a matter of fact thing to get handouts. Now I wonder if this same loser running from the police is the same person bragging about getting paid for doing nothing. These people are not irate about some political ideology – they do not want the gravy train to stop. Biden = lock downs and more hand outs. Trump = get off your lazy ass and get a job. Many liberals have valid points about the environment but they are getting drowned out by a generation of kids who are now adults who prefer to riot in the streets vs be productive contributors to society. Covid has been a windfall for these “takers” in the form of hand outs and a platform to act like selfish morons. I also feel bad for anyone (black, white, asian, latino, etc…) that has been wrongfully beat up/shot by bad cops. Their voice is also being hijacked by the “takers” of society.

  18. LOOSECANNON – The only thing sinister here is your views. The young man who was probably fairly intoxicated and trying to show off for his girlfriend deserves a slap on the wrist misdemeanor charge. The people in the parade deserve the same annoyed allowance that we allow all political rallies/parades.
You truly are the worst of us Edhatters LOOSECANNON…advocating for violence is reprehensible.

  19. Sacjon – I get it – I am being overly simplistic with my take – I do not begrudge your viewpoint. But here is how I see it. Do you vote for a person who is morally corrupt but whose fiscal policies and view on the political swamp are probably beneficial for the well being of our country or do you vote for a person who is morally corrupt and senile and part of the political swamp whose policies will push our country towards socialism. Fact is people will vote how they want. I just wish politicians like Salud would not line their pockets with PAC money and can truly represent their constituents vs special interests. Years ago I vote for Ross Perot because he was a businessman who wasn’t beholden to anyone. So maybe I am too much of an idealist when it comes to politics. I am just really concerned that Obama sent us on a course for college grads to become social workers who rely on hand outs vs job makers/creators which power our country’s prosperity. Charities want $$$ not more volunteers. If you truly want to do good in the world, then make some money and never take a handout. Once you amass wealth, then donate to causes you care about. Why do you not see these type of people rioting? Because they are too busy working.

  20. westsidesam is right, these guys caravanned here from out of town. a lot of trumpers caravaning around and make pathetic attempts to intimidate others. This one trump idiot got called out and his MAGA hat taken. So he gets out and quickly walks up to the guy that took his hat, in a manner of aggression. young guy defends himself. you either defend or you get hit, right? he defended himself. So what, a trumnp supporting jerk got shoved to the ground. more of this to come i’m positive.

  21. Oh give me a break. I don’t buy it. Please tell me from what program are people getting checks because of COVID. The only thing in place now is standard unemployment. No one is living comfortably in SB off government handouts. Biden does not equal more handouts and lockdowns. Biden want’s more guidance from the Federal government so we have a more consistent approach to allow more to open not shutting down the economy. And as far as handouts go, Trump is pushing for his own party sign a multi trillion dollar stimulus bill. Do some nonpartisan research before spewing right wing propaganda. But I get it, you don’t like change. But you should also know that the President has very little power to make major policy changes. What the President can do is lead by example and maybe bring out society back together a little bit by calling out extremists. Our society is being torn in half and Trump openly makes no effort to bring parties together. Rather he feeds off the division and only cares about his base. This President of the United States has the open and public support from the KKK and white supremacist organizations. That should say it all. We can disagree on tax policy, COVID response, economic reform, etc. But we should all agree that we just need to be better to each other. This story is an example of that hate and divide currently affecting the Nation. Policies aside, Trump is toxic to what makes this nation great. He is the opposite of what we all need to be better humans to each other. At least Biden seems to understand the societal issues plaguing our nation and speaks like a reasonable adult.

  22. It’s a good point! Possibly the main thing of being president…is simply BEING PRESIDENTIAL!!! We tend to give Presidents way too much credit/blame for things going right/wrong, and a lot of what the two parties do at this point is pretty interchangeable. The President needs to at least appear to be the adult in every public room they are in.

  23. We have limits to free speech in this country. You can’t yell fire in a crowded theater, remember. Blasting car horns, being a public nuisance, and disrupting traffic flow isn’t free speech. This was purely an aggressive and obnoxious display of muscle by the Trumpers. The cops should have intervened earlier to prevent the inevitable confrontation that resulted from their provocative and idiotic behavior. Shame on the SBPD for taking sides in this confrontation.

  24. We first saw rolling caravans of armed militia members spraying bear spray on BLM marchers in Portland. Then we saw them harass a Biden-Harris bus into cancelling their rallies in Texas. There have been other reports of Trumpist behavior from these caravans. How many incidents have to happen before Democrats become acutely sensitive to these caravans and view them as a potential threat? For the first time, we are considering the need to buy a firearm so that we can defend our republic.

  25. He looks more like a drunk or an addict than someone actually out protesting for or against a candidate. At least he didn’t plot to kidnap a governor, shoot anybody, run over anybody, causing intimidation at a voting station, or running into a car like the far right activists have been doing.

  26. Pretty sure I just agreed with Roger that the Proud Boys are really crappy and the guy grabbing the hat is just kind of crappy. In Generaltree’s defense, he hasn’t tried to kidnap anyone and/or assault anyone that I know of (except perhaps the Edhat communities sense of coherent discourse… generaltree has assaulted the hell out of that!!). So… to reiterate/expand upon…
    Proud Boys – really crappy
Drunk guy grabbing hat/assaulting – pretty crappy
Generalltree’s posts – message board crappy

  27. Whatever. They are not jailing people for stealing cars, so this guy is going to jail for years for a hat? Plus the other guy got out of his car. This will be quietly disposed of in a few months with a fine and slap on the wrist. If the cops can ever catch him. Maybe after they post for help on social media?

  28. Hey Pitmix it sounds like you wanna ramp the fight up even more and I think your kind of words are why we’re in this situation in the first place. On both sides people are going way too aggro. You know you couldn’t (and wouldn’t want to) back it up on the street. I wouldn’t either. I don’t want a friggin’ riot/fight on Cabrillo. That’s for losers. Don’t you agree? Can’t we just all vote and stop hassling? Live with the results.

  29. so much for that tolerance the folks on the left preach about. I hope they find this coward – see him run like the wussy he is when the cops show up. He will be identified & let the public know who this & his beach gal POS’s are. …and what local company employs them…can hardly wait!!

  30. VOICE – don’t be so simple. “both sides” encompasses both sides of the riot. Neo-nazis were part of one of those “sides.” The words were said, you are wrong and that’s that. Again, argue context, but you can’t deny he said there were “very fine people” there.

  31. That’s actually pretty good humor! It ties in subtly with the the other thread I’ve posted on way too many times today (having a thing with the mass shooting event denier CWAZNY). The shop (Errr guard hut) has a heater but it was cold today… and Yeah I do hate to crank the heater too high. I can break off work now though and while I do love engaging/helping you… my 3 year old is a bit more enjoyable to engage with… plus, in a sharp turn from you, she mostly tells the truth (Halloween candy consumption notwithstanding )…

  32. Trying to send a couple pictures of the bad guy. One picture is a close-up of his face & tattoos …. Hopefully, EdHat will post them. Not sure, but it looks like my comments from yesterday have been deleted for some reason. Or, maybe, I can’t find them….

  33. 1) Our country is all about freedom of speech, and protecting that freedom of speech from bullies (of either side).
    2) What goes around comes around, meaning those two criminals will be dealt with eventually, one way or another.
    3) While people have been arguing politics, I’ve spent the last month bottom-feeding, during the DOW and NASDAQ dips, on cheap stocks of good companies. As of this morning, the DOW and NASDAQ dips have reversed, and stock values are now climbing…. Yee hah!
    4) GRAMMASB – you go girl! I’d have given the guy a good right hook myself!

  34. Oh boo-hoo, the Trump supporter lost his MAGA hat and came lunging at the impudent young man who was pissed off at their unauthorized parade. Let’s make a federal case of it. Give me a break! This “gentleman” as you can him, the Trump supporter, is no gentleman at all, just another fool duped by the biggest conman in American political history. This caravan was obviously intended to provoke. I’ve heard they were driving along Fairview in Goleta, on State Street, and along the waterfront on Cabrillo Blvd. I witnessed the caravan myself when I was sitting in Chase Palm Park trying to enjoy a nice afternoon when these redneck hooligans came driving along the road, blasting horns, disturbing the peace and being a safety hazard to other motorists and pedestrians. Their repulsive political views aside, the cops should have broken up this sinister parade before it ended in confrontation. It’s too bad that the SBPD seems to choose sides. A free ride for the Trump scofflaws, and a manhunt from a young man who was cheeky enough to grab some slob’s MAGA hat. What a joke!

  35. Pitmix: If the confrontation turns violent, of course that can’t be ignored; however, if protesters from either side are just driving around acting like deranged preschoolers, it’s best to either ignore them or make fun of them.

  36. Stocks more overvalued now by almost any measure than at any time in history. The only reason they are this high is because Trump kept interest rates at almost 0 and juiced the economy unnecessarily, creating massive public debt even before the pandemic. It’s ludicrous how repubs that used to care about debt went along with these efforts. And now the dems have to go in and clean the mess up, just like Obama did for the Bush housing debacle. Why are we the only adults in the room? Investing now is not putting capital in good companies, it is gambling. Hope you don’t come up snake eyes.

  37. What a kook – Don’t agree with Trump supporters and def not a fan of Trump, but people have to be able to support and express their choices, it’s the American way. Someone on the beach should have dropped this moron and held him for the PD. Takes off running like a little child, man up and face your actions koooook.

  38. I’m disappointed in Santa Barbara. I’m glad people are talking shows what a divided city we really are. No ones even trying to make it better NO ONE Keep attacking each other then we will never be a city that us local can be proud of. You can just look at all the deleting the monitor is doing.

  39. I hope you tolerate it when someone you don’t know disagrees with you and throws rocks at your car b/c by the looks of it you are quick to defend yourself. This behavior is what this privileged generation is being allowed to do and get away with. The generation of everyone gets a trophy and it’s. Ok to draw on the walls b/c you are expressing yourself. SMH/LOL

  40. Gramma… suppose we should be part of the “Greatest Generation” who fought against the Nazis but are now voting for a Nazi sympathizer? Because this “privileged generation” is trying to fight against neo-Nazis and achieve equality for all races and ethnicities but ya’ll keep standing in the way.

  41. LOOSE – what? The guy committed a crime (assault and battery, resisting arrest, etc) and should be prosecuted. He was not under any threat of violence other than the situation he alone created by reaching in and taking the driver’s hat. Sorry, but your “disappointment” is not only unwarranted, it’s not really something I’m concerned with. Again, I hate Trump more than anything and feel that his followers are brain-washed fools, but they still have rights and this guy violated them.

  42. So throwing rocks damaging vehicles or worse yet physically hurting an individual is OK…..That’s why all individuals who are qualified should VOTE tomorrow not behave in the manner this young man behaved. I support equality but not in this fashion I am a minority by being a Mexican American Woman but I don’t disrespect others space. If we weren’t. In a political year and this would have occurred for some other reason it would be theft, assault and evading a police officer this beach goer from what I have read was acting disrespectful prior to this incident on the beach.

  43. Try exercising your first amendment rights and see how protected you are. Bear spray is illegal to use on people but those Trump supporters were spraying gallons on people in Portland from their Trucks. No one was punished for that. It’s the wild west out there, as you will find out tomorrow.

  44. Apparently by some of these comments, we don’t have equality to vote our party preference. Or “allowed to be in SB” if you are not a liberal. It’s laughable that you speak of equality, when you are so intolerant of someone who doesn’t share your political view.

  45. @12:00, wow, I didn’t think people still believed Trump actually said that. If you believe this, imagine what else you believe about Trump that isn’t really true but the media kept repeating over and over! Biden also kept knowingly repeating this lie even in the debates (is it okay when he lies us?) Here are his words verbatim, please read and educate yourself and always remember – the media is a for profit business whose #1 goal is to make money – not to factually convey news (though it should be).
    READ: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-infrastructure/

  46. VOR – Trump did actually say that. Are you seriously saying he never said the words, “you had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides. ” Tell me that was a liberal hoax.

  47. Sacjon, what little regard I had for your posts is now gone. Please don’t believe everything the media tells you, they do not have anyone’s best interest at heart except the owners who profit from them. I posted the full transcript, is isn’t very long, please read it in its entirety.

  48. VOICE – oh no! I’m so sad to hear that. Look, you can argue context all you want, but he said those words, denying that is absurd. That was my point. Here you go:
“THE PRESIDENT: Excuse me, excuse me. They didn’t put themselves — and you had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides. You had people in that group.”
His words, right there. Again, you can argue context, but you can’t argue that he did not say there “were very fine people, on both sides.” Case closed.

  49. Facts are being ignored. I cringe at the statement that a jury trial is the best system we have. I think it’s more the jury deliberations that breakdown the ignorant into accepting facts. Sac why can’t you answer questions from reason. Also I don’t think that girl knew the instigator, otherwise the police would have caught this animal by now.

  50. Sac: read…..the…..entire……transcript….. Let me help you with two parts you intentionally ignore to push your false narrative:
“I’ve condemned neo-Nazis. I’ve condemned many different groups. But not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me. Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch”
“And you had people — and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists — because they should be condemned totally. But you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists. Okay? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly.”

  51. VOICE – do you know what the word “context,” means? I’ve said over and over again, you can argue context. yeah, Maybe you think he meant one thing and I think he meant something else. that’s called “arguing over context.” I agree, his words can be taken different ways, but you can NOT deny he said the words he was recorded saying. I’m just pointing that out based on the original comment about what he said. He said those words. We can disagree by what he meant, but not that he said them. Do you understand now?

  52. DM, the fact that you and I disagree on facts is a cause for real concern. Even if Biden wins and the Senate flips, there is still that fact that 45% of the country thinks Trump is the right person to lead this country, or maybe thinks things are so bad that it doesn’t matter who our leader is. That doesn’t bode well for our future. Chinese dynasties rarely lasted more than a few centuries, maybe our time is over too.

  53. Do people have the right to get together in caravans with their pals and trail their colors and make a scene on behalf of their preferred candidate?
    Yeah.
Would it also be great for EVERYONE to recognize that people are f@ing spun right now with emotion and we are in a particularly superheated and potential dangerous moment and maybe just choose not to go out looking for a conflict?
    Yes.
So maybe everyone can try and just stay calm and choose not to be tribal and selfish in your posture for a little while so we can all get through this period without anyone getting hurt.

  54. SBLOCAL1967
I’m sorry, but the fact that you can make this statement about Trump’s policies is laughable. “Do you vote for a person who is morally corrupt but whose fiscal policies and view on the political swamp are probably beneficial for the well being of our country”
Benefit of our country? No. Benefit of the wealthy elite of our country.
