After six months of collective bargaining, Santa Barbara MTD has reached a final agreement with the Teamsters Local 186 (Teamsters) bargaining unit representing bus operators and maintenance personnel. These employees voted in favor of a new three-year collective bargaining agreement covering wages, medical and dental benefits, pensions, and working conditions.

“I’m pleased that we’ve been able to reach a fair agreement with our employees who do so much to keep our community connected,” said MTD General Manager Jerry Estrada. “We believe this contract honors the hard work of our employees while continuing to steward MTD’s financial health.”

The new agreement goes into effect retroactively to July 1, 2019.

Santa Barbara MTD has been engaged in the collective bargaining process for several months with Teamsters Local 186, which represents MTD’s bus operators, operations supervisors and maintenance employees.

MTD management has come to two Tentative Agreements with the Teamsters bargaining team, one in early July and one in late August. Both agreements were voted on by the employees, but a majority of support was not reached in either case.

The current contract is under an extension through September 30th.

MTD management continues to work towards a resolution of the situation in good faith, to avoid disruption in service to the public.

  1. Never forgiven MTD drivers for their “sympathy strike” here disrupting out local transit to show solidarity with some other union, when they were not even having the same problems. Unions always manage to destroy what they touch.

  2. Never confuse private industry unions and public government employee unions. Which you just did. Private industry unions bargain at arms length for mutual benefit. Public employee unions elect who they want to sit on the other side of the bargaining table and hold the public hostage until their demands are met since public employee unions control the operation of public services. Raising child labor laws etc in defense of unions today, public employee unions. is bogus. But a nice try. Plus we might have been better served today if children did develop early work skills and a work ethic instead of their delayed adolescence they suffer from today.

  3. FACTOTUM – Don’t be confused, your original sweeping and bogus indictment of unions was without distinction between private industry unions and public government employee.
Maybe we would be better served “… if children did develop early work skills and a work ethic …” Better hurry while there are still some coal mines left. MAGA!
