Caltrans will perform an emergency guardrail repair on southbound US Highway 101 in Santa Barbara on Wednesday, June 26.
Motorists will encounter a closure of the No. 3 (right) lane of southbound US Highway 101 from Garden Street to Milpas Street from 9 am until 12 noon. Delays in this area should not exceed 15 minutes.
These repairs are necessary following a recent traffic accident to ensure a safe environment for everyone. This work will be performed by the Caltrans Santa Barbara Maintenance team.

I hope they clean up every piece of trash they see. God, what a mess. i drove 101 through SB today and it was litter from one end to the next. why does SB allow Caltrans to ignore the trash in its community? Trash on the roadsides, homeless encampments in the bushes, trash in the medians. Come on, SB, get after it. And why do they allow the panhandlers on the freeway off ramps? Other communities would have the CHP out there immediately.
I always thought CalTrans’ responsibilities were road repairs/improvement and that litter cleanup lived with volunteers or people serving out a criminal sentence with community service. Is trash removal part of CalTrans’ duties as well? Anyway, to answer your last question, the reason is that Santa Barbara is a city that enables, not ends, homelessness.
Hi, If you go on the Caltrans website you will find a page for filing complaints/concerns. The list will show you what falls under Caltrans oversight. Trash/panhandling/ illegal signs, etc. Yes, volunteers do pick up trash through the Adopt a Highway program, which is a great way for residents to help out. BUT they are obligated to clean monthly on two lane/three lane highways but many volunteer groups can’t get out there that often. And many sections have no group to attend to the trash. The Downtown Organization, Visit Santa Barbara, and the Goleta/SB Chambers of Commerce should make highway clean up their priority as that is the first thing visitors see. Montecito is as bad and at times worse in terms of trash/homeless stuff. And then there’s all the homeless encampments that greet our train travelers! That’s a whole other area of concern, or at least it should be. Mattresses, trash, tents, etc. etc. line the tracks in certain areas.
