A recent autopsy shows the firefighter killed while battling the Thomas Fire suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. A procession will take place Sunday morning from Ventura to San Diego.
On Saturday the Ventura County Medical Examiner released the cause of death for 32-year-old Cory Iverson as “thermal injuries and smoke inhalation.”
Iverson was assigned to the Thomas Fire as a part of a strike team from the Cal Fire’s San Diego unit. The five-engine team was on the front lines facing flames just outside Fillmore when Iverson, a fire apparatus engineer who had worked for Cal Fire since 2009, was killed on Thursday.
An accident review team is investigating Iverson’s death.
Iverson is survived by his wife, Ashley, and their 2-year-old daughter, with a second daughter on the way this spring.
A procession will take place Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. from the Medical Examiner’s Office in Ventura to San Diego. It’s scheduled to proceed southbound on Highway 101 through Ventura County. From there, the procession will continue to SR-134 to I-210 east and eventually southbound on I-15 to the San Diego area.
Fire officials advise there will be traffic impacts. For those who plan to pay their respects and view the procession, it’s requested they utilize sidewalks on overpasses and do not park or stop on overpasses or on freeways. The below map shows the route for the planned procession.
A funeral procession and service has been scheduled for Dec. 23. and is scheduled to take place at the Rock Church in Point Loma, officials said.
Friends of the family set up a GoFund Me page to raise money for Iverson’s widow and children, they have raised nearly $350,000 within three days.
