Many of you have been inquiring about upcoming events hosted by the Community Environmental Council. As of today, CEC’s Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival has been postponed and is now scheduled for July 10-12, 2020 at Alameda Park.
At this time, no action is needed from exhibitors, volunteers, or other participants. Please pass this information along to those on your team it may affect. If you have a scheduling conflict or other concerns about the date change, contact us at earthday@cecmail.org.
While we are eager to bring our community together in honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, our focus is on ensuring we do this in a safe way that supports public health.
We will be in close communication as the situation evolves. Please keep an eye on www.SBEarthDay.org. We are looking for other meaningful ways in April to honor Earth Day and the good work of the regional environmental community; your ideas are welcome.
As we navigate this unknown territory together, CEC’s long-term mission to provide regional solutions to the many threats evolving from a warming climate has never felt more relevant. We are leaning into this current public health crisis to do what we have always done: work with you to build communities that are healthy, strong and resilient.

The City Council could have cancelled this yesterday but didn’t. We have the WORST Council ever. These people need to be canned. All they care about is taxes, low wage jobs, the downtown and their special interest groups.
George Carlin warned that the Earth would eventually get us:
“I think, to be fair, the planet sees us as a mild threat. Something to be dealt with. And the planet can defend itself in an organized, collective way, the way a beehive or an ant colony can. A collective defense mechanism. The planet will think of something. What would you do if you were the planet? How would you defend yourself against this troublesome, pesky species? Let’s see… Viruses. Viruses might be good. They seem vulnerable to viruses. And, uh…viruses are tricky, always mutating and forming new strains whenever a vaccine is developed. Perhaps, this first virus could be one that compromises the immune system of these creatures. Perhaps a human immunodeficiency virus, making them vulnerable to all sorts of other diseases and infections that might come along. And maybe it could be spread sexually, making them a little reluctant to engage in the act of reproduction.”

Wow – interesting comments and why so negative I wonder – just tired of hearing about potential exposure to coronavirus? Yes, City Council could’ve banned all gatherings but it’s up to CEC to actually “cancel” or “postpone” the event. County Health is talking to those doing scheduled events in the upcoming month or more so we’ll see more of this – and for good reason. Our medical system can’t handle a mass outbreak so caution is best at this point. If that doesn’t work for you, oh well…
